Recycling
Recycling is very important to John Jay College. The college conducted a survey on recycling, and is overhauling its recycling program, learning from the past implementation which faced a variety of obstacles (John Jay, Environmental Affairs, n.d.b.). The College also “us[es] a bailer to bind our corrugated cardboard which has dramatically increased the quantity of mixed paper being recycled and reduces manpower and space needs. (CUNY Sustainability Project, 2008).” According to Hazel Golden of the Purchasing Division, the College started purchasing some recycled materials from the nineties, including hand towels, toilet tissues and copy papers (John Jay, Environmental Affairs, n.d.b.). The College is overhauling its recycling program, learning from the past experience Steps the College has taken include: • Purchased new recycling bins for all offices and corridors • Marketed the new effort placing posters throughout the college • Use of a bailer to bind our corrugated cardboard which increases the amount of corrugated cardboard being recycled and uses less energy to compact than a truck and reduces manpower and space needs. Trained all custodial staff on separating trash and recycling materials increase the quantity of mixed paper, plastic and metal being recycled Future plans include purchasing special trash compactors which will eliminate thousands of black garbage bags from the waste stream and landfills and save the college tens of thousands of dollars per year.
