Eligibility
Distinguished students are expected to maintain an overall 3.5 grade point average to continue in the program.  Each student’s academic progress is reviewed semester by semester.

Program Description
Students may select two tuition-free courses in the summer preceding freshman year:

Ethnic Studies 511 – meets Ethnic Studies course requirement of General Education
Speech/Drama 511 – experiencing the arts in Manhattan

In addition, participants are eligible to complete a two-week peer tutoring/mentoring course.  Students have the opportunity to serve as freshman orientation leaders in the summer after their first year.

In their second year, Distinguished Students are eligible to serve as peer tutors and mentors in the Learning Enhancement Center.  They are encouraged to apply for the BA/MA Program and other accelerated college programs, such as the Albany Internship Program, the summer White House Fellowship Program and the McNair Post- Baccalaureate Program.

During their junior and senior years, students are encouraged to compete for external and internal scholarships.  Many students work on campus as tutors, orientation leaders, and student volunteers or with high school students in the College Now Program.

Specialized Advisement
The program’s director provides personalized guidance to all distinguished students, assists students as they fulfill requirements, choose majors, and decide on a career path.  The director also informs distinguished students of special academic opportunities, fellowships and internships.
