Provost's Biography
Jane P. Bowers, Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs of John Jay College since 2007, was educated at Harvard University, the University of California at Irvine, and Berkeley, where she received her Ph.D. in English in 1981. She is a scholar of American literature and theater and is on the doctoral faculty of the CUNY Graduate School in the Theater and American Studies programs. Dr. Bowers taught in the English Department at John Jay College from 1987-1996. From 1996-1997 she was a fellow of the Bunting Institute at Harvard and from 1997-2001, Director of the Women’s Studies Program at Hunter College. She served as Director of Academic Affairs for the CUNY Honors College from 2001-2005 before returning to John Jay in 2005 as the Dean of Undergraduate Studies. As provost, she has led the college in a significant expansion of the professoriate, a dramatic increase in grant-funding, the development of new liberal arts majors and master’s programs, the creation of new academic departments, and the continuous improvement of the college’s curriculum and academic support services. As the academic leader of the college, she has made the support of John Jay’s talented scholar-teachers and the success of its students her top priorities.
