ALL
ABOUT CHILD CARE AT JOHN JAY COLLEGE
WHAT CHILD CARE SERVICES
ARE AVAILABLE AT JOHN JAY? The Children's Center of John Jay College provides care during week-day classes for up to 55
children from six months through five years. The children are divided into four
aged-based groups.
WHERE IS THE CENTER? The
Center is located in Room 1500 North (445 W. 59th Street). The entrance is near the public
phones at the back of the Bookstore in the southeast corner of the building.
WHO CAN ENROLL IN THE
CENTER? The Center is available to students of the College who enroll their
children so that they can attend day-time classes, study, work, and participate
in College activities. Priority is given to matriculated undergraduates.
Others, graduate and non-matriculated, may enroll when space is available.
Child care hours are scheduled according to parent CLASS schedules. Hours for
STUDY and WORK are assigned at the beginning of each semester according to
available space and are not guaranteed. Children must be enrolled to attend the
Center. Drop-off (occasional) care is not provided. Check the main page for enrollment procedures.
WHEN IS THE CHILDREN'S
CENTER OPEN? The Center is open during fall and spring semesters, weekdays
only. Check with the Center for exact hours each semester. Summer hours are posted
in April at the time of telephone registration.
WHAT IS THE EDUCATION
PROGRAM AT THE CENTER? The Center offers an educational program where the
children learn about themselves and their world in a warm, caring environment.
They experience an intellectually stimulating, physically active, and
emotionally supportive atmosphere provided by teachers, assistant teachers, and
aides under the leadership of the Director. The children paint, draw, glue,
read stories, go to the play ground, build with blocks, dance, sing, work
puzzles, dress up, play pretend games, and more.
HOW MUCH DOES THE CENTER
COST? Because they are heavily subsided, fees are moderate depending on the
length of the day and the age of the child. Payment plans are explained on a
detailed fee schedule available at the Center. Check the fee
page for current charges.
HOW DO I ENROLL MY CHILD
AT THE CENTER? Apply to Room 1500, North Hall, or call 212-237-8310 to receive
an application packet. If the Center is full, you will be placed on a waiting
list. In order to remain on the active waiting list you must respond to
inquiries mailed to you from the Children's Center. The Center often fills up
before the beginning of each semester; if room opens up mid-semester, parents
are contacted in order of their date of application. Check here
for a summary of enrollment procedures.
HOW CAN I INCREASE MY
CHANCES OF ENROLLING IN THE CENTER?
- Apply well in advance of the semester you want to enroll your
child. The waiting list is long, and the Center's capacity is limited by
law. Admissions procedures take time.
- Keep your address and phone number up-to-date so we can reach you
when space is available.
- Drop by the Center at least once a semester to confirm your
continued interest and always respond quickly to mail or phone calls from
us.
- Don't be discouraged by the long waiting list; go ahead and apply;
the sooner you apply, the sooner your name will come to the top of the
list.
- If you have questions or comments, or need advice about child care
in general, come by and speak with the Director, Bill Altham.
