The Office of Continuing and Professional Studies (OCPS) at John Jay College of Criminal Justice aims to be a catalyst for new ideas and innovative practices by bringing together John Jay’s distinguished academic community and working professionals in criminal justice, law enforcement, corrections, public safety, media, and other related sectors. OCPS offers a wide variety of innovative seminars, workshops, roundtables, and customized training programs that provide a bridge between cutting-edge research and field practice. By serving as an incubator for new learning communities through dialogue, applied research, and information exchange, OCPS is positioned to meet the evolving educational and practical needs of criminal justice professionals. All programs are taught or administered by senior faculty at John Jay College or on site. The Center on Media, Crime and Justice (CMCJ)
The Center on Media, Crime and Justice links media professionals, academic researchers and criminal justice practitioners in a unique and frank dialogue about the leading crime issues behind the headlines. It aims to encourage and promote informed, quality journalism by developing knowledge networks for the media across related criminal justice fields, ranging from urban law enforcement, prison issues and national justice policies to organized crime and international terrorism. The Center sponsors two major conferences annually on justice-related issues of the day and a perennial series of roundtables, lectures, brown-bag sessions and briefings throughout the year. It also serves as a training resource for budding and mid-career journalists, including those in the ethnic press, through fellowships, internships, sponsored courses, and prizes – and for criminal justice professionals and academics seeking to understand media cultures. By identifying and making available to journalists the best scholarship and best practices developed at John Jay College and elsewhere in the academic community, the CMCJ provides a stimulating, non-partisan, and mutually beneficial meeting-place for the worlds of scholarship, technology, government and law enforcement, and the media – and in the process invigorate the national and international conversation about society and crime. The Center for Modern Forensic Practice
The Center for Modern Forensic Practice aims to integrate the best of new scientific developments into both investigative and adjudicative practice. The Center’s staff will assist criminal justice professionals in evaluating modern forensic techniques and incorporating them into their local situations, as well as by providing advanced training in DNA techniques. The Continuing Education Program

The Continuing Education Program offers open- to-the- public non-credit courses that are designed for both personal enrichment and professional development. The curriculum includes courses ranging from criminalistics, forensics, languages, ESL, film, music, computers, health and fitness, and test reparation. Certificate programs in paralegal studies, legal assistant studies, addiction counseling, emergency medical technician, and security management are offered. Visit the Web site.


The Criminal Justice Center

The Criminal Justice Center serves criminal justice agencies by providing seminars, workshops, and training programs, and by conducting evaluations and studies of criminal justice operations and issues. The Center’s Security Management Institute provides training, professional development, and consultation services for the private security industry. Other Center activities include matters dealing with investigative techniques, international security, counter terrorism and hostage negotiation. Visit the Criminal Justice Center Web site


Fire Science Institute

Through its educational and training programs, the Fire Science Institute serves the needs of researchers and educators as well as professionals in the firefighting field. Activities include training and education programs for private and public agencies, such as the Fire Safety Directors Program for high rise buildings, hotels, and hospitals; originating the first cadet program for the Fire Department of New York; integrating college students into the fire service; arson-related instruction for health and safety instructors of the New York State Professional Firefighters and the Uniformed Fire Officers Association of New York City. In addition, the Institute has established itself as a certification agency for a variety of specialists and officials. Currently, the Fire Science Institute is preparing curriculum to commence instruction of Local Law 26(Emergency Action Plan: EAP) for all required Fire Safety Directors. The John Jay Leadership Academy
The John Jay Leadership Academy is designed to focus exclusively on the practice of leadership in order to meet the leadership needs of an ever-more challenging world. Its mission is to develop next-generation leaders who populate a national community of practice dedicated to enhancing the safety of the public while promoting justice in a free society. It seeks to provide a global forum and professional study for public safety executive leadership from both the public and private security sectors. Further, it addresses educational and development needs of current and emerging public safety leaders as well as chief security officers and corporate security directors. Both because of its history and the stable education and training infrastructure that is in place, John Jay is uniquely positioned to become a living laboratory for learning about leadership in the public sector and providing learning experiences that answer significant questions about effective leaders, their strategies, how they implement them, adapt their styles to circumstances, and inspire loyalty in subordinates. What are their expectations for success and failure and, as thought leaders of an industry, how are they shaping the future? The NY/NJ Regional Center for Public-Safety Innovation (RCPI)

The NY/NJ Regional Center for Public-Safety Innovation (formerly known as the Regional Community Policing Institute or RCPI) is one of twenty-seven institutes currently funded by the U.S. Department of Justice, Office of Community Oriented Policing Services, to deliver high-quality, adult-tailored training to specific audiences through local partnerships with public safety agencies, educational institutions, non-profit groups and other involved stakeholders. The RCPI offers training and technical assistance to law enforcement, public safety and criminal justice agencies as well as to the communities and other stakeholders that they serve, in areas such as Problem Solving, Ethics and Integrity, Human Trafficking Awareness, Fundamentals of Community Policing, Counter-terrorism Awareness, Domestic Violence, Cultural Diversity, and Gang Awareness. As part of the President’s DNA Initiative, RCPI offers a DNA Evidence, Identification, Collection and Preservation Course, Advancing Justice through DNA Technology. Visit the Web site


The Prisoner Reentry Institute
 
The Prisoner Reentry Institute at John Jay College of Criminal Justice was established in February 2005. Its mission is to spur innovation and improve practice in the field of reentry by fostering effective partnerships between criminal justice and non-criminal justice disciplines; advancing knowledge; and translating research into effective policy and service delivery. Current initiatives include partnerships with the microenterprise, social work and legal fields; the incubation and evaluation of new approaches related to such populations as juveniles, individuals who serve lengthy prison sentences, and young adults; the development of practical and research-based resources on topics such as jail reentry and education planning; and national and regional convenings including a national Reentry Roundtable on Education and the Occasional Series on Reentry Research, a monthly lecture series bringing together policymakers, researchers and practitioners to discuss cutting edge reentry issues. The Prisoner Reentry Institute acts as a bridge between the John Jay College community and the reentry field by partnering with faculty on research projects, connecting students to internship opportunities, and providing resources and assistance with curriculum design for faculty interested in addressing reentry issues in their courses and departments. Special Programs Office

Special Programs is responsible for the design and implementation of innovative courses of study that meet the changing needs of police and other public safety agencies. These courses include Managing Situations Involving Emotionally Disturbed Persons, which provides academic, clinical and field training for law enforcement personnel to further develop their skills in working safely and effectively with emotionally disturbed clients. The New York State certified Basic Police Officer and Peace Officer training courses are also offered by Special Programs.
