Members of the John Jay community can now use their personal laptop computers to access the Internet through special wireless connections that are now available:

BMW
North Hall
Westport
Haaren Hall

Additional areas of the campus will be added to the wireless network as this project continues.

INFORMATION ON WIRELESS ACCESS AT JOHN JAY

Your laptop must contain a wireless adapter that is WiFi (802.11b compatible ) and you must have a John Jay email account.
Please Note: You're John Jay email username and password is the username and password needed to connect to the wireless network.

Faculty or staff members can obtain a John Jay email account through the DoIT helpdesk at x8200. All registered and paid Students are issued an email account.

CONNECTION INSTRUCTIONS FOR OLD WIRELESS CONNECTION

For Laptops with Mac OS X - OLD WIRELESS

If you are using Mac OS X, your AirPort card should readily discover the wireless networks broadcast near you. Below are instructions for ensuring that your Apple AirPort card will connect to the John Jay College wireless network.

  1. From the Apple Menu. Select Location, then Networking.
  2. Set "Show:" to AirPort.
  3. Set "Configure" to use DHCP Server.
  4. Select the AirPort tab and make sure JOHN JAY COLLEGE appears in the SSID or Network field. This sets the "preferred" network when one connects via AirPort.
  5. Verify that the "show airport status in menu bar" option is selected.
  6. Select "Apply Now" to apply these settings for your AirPort card.

All other information will be served by the DHCP server. Once you've checked your AirPort configuration (and provided you have a decent wireless signal), you should be able to connect to John Jay College wireless network.You will need to enter your John Jay username and password in order to authenticate. This username and password is the same as your email username and password.

Wireless Client Instruction for Windows Vista - OLD WIRELESS

Click Start -> Hover until you get to “Connect To”:



Click “Connect To”:



Choose “John Jay College” under Wireless Network Connection.



Click on “save this network" :




Click “Close” and then open a web browser, where you will be redirect temporarily for authentication purposes.
Enter your John Jay username and password, this username & password is the same as your email username and password. You are on John Jay Wireless.





Wireless Client Instruction for XP

Click Start -> hover the start menu until





Click on connect:



Click on “Connect Anyway”

After being connected, open a web browser so that you may be authenticated and allow on John Jay College’s wireless network.



Enter your John Jay username and password, this username & password is the same as your email username and password. You are on John Jay Wireless.


CONNECTION INSTRUCTIONS FOR NEW WIRELESS CONNECTION

For Laptops with Mac OS X - NEW WIRELESS

John Jay College has deployed a new wireless system. While we’ll gain faster communication speed, significant improvement in wireless security will be our biggest gain. Security is one of the most important components in wireless a system that ensures the integrity of communications among networked devices. As wireless communications expands and engulf our professional and academic lives at John Jay College, an up-to-date wireless security system becomes increasingly more vital to the college’s data security. DoIT is tasks with securing faculty, staff and student identities; your work (dissertation, for example); grades and so on. We have deployed secured wireless system using state-of-the-arts hardware platform, combined with design from esteemed experts on security issues in wireless communications.

The John Jay College SSID is being deprecated and will eventually go away. If you are a student use the John Jay Student SSID. If you are a Faculty and/or Staff member use the John Jay Faculty and Staff SSID. Guest users should use the John Jay Guest SSID. Guest must contact the Department of Information for a temporary account. Valid Identification and business justification is required for guest access.

Open Internet Connect (/Applications/Internet Connect).

Configuring Macintosh OS 10.5 (Leopard) for John Jay Faculty and Staff

Select the Network icon from your Mac's System Preferences.
Select AirPort from the list of networks, then the Advanced button.

Select the 802.1X tab, then System from the Domain menu.
If you are using OS 10.5.4, you may not see a Domain menu. Instead, select the + sign at the bottom of the Login Window Profiles column, and select Add System Profile.

Enter your username and password and click OK

Click Start and select Control Panel.

In Control Panel go to Network and Sharing.

In the Tasks list on the left hand side of the Network and Sharing Center screen, select Set up a connection or network to launch the connection wizard.

Select Manually connet to a wireless network.

Enter/Select your wireless settings as follows and click Next:

Choose Change connection setting

Only "Connect automatically when this network is in range" should be check on the Connection tab.

Click on the Security tab

 

Click the drop-down menu entitled “choose a network authentication method” and choose “Protected EAP (PEAP)

Click Settings…

Uncheck “Validate server certificate”; make sure “Enable Fast Reconnect” is checked. Under the “Select Authentication Method click Configure.

Uncheck “automatically use my Windows logon name and password (and domain if any).”
Click the OKs to apply the configuration.
The following should pop up on the right corner of you screen:

After clicking on it, you will be prompted for a username, password and domain name. It important that you enter JOHN-JAY-NET for the Logon Domain.


Wireles Instructions for BlackBerry

Press the menu key  to get additional icons on the Home Screen

Use the Track Ball to navigate to the Manage Connections icon. Click on it.
Choose Setup UP Wi-Fi Network.
Click Next,
Click Scan For Networks
Choose John Jay Faculty and Staff
Security Type: PEAP
Carefully enter your username and password
For CA certificate choose: Entrust.net Secure Server CA
Inner Link security: EAP-MS-CHAP v2
Token: <none selected>
Click Connect, once your connection is successful save the profile.

NB: If you are a Student use the John Jay Student and if you are a Faculty and/or Staff member use the John Jay Faculty and Staff SSID.

Windows XP - Connecting to John Jay College Secure Wireless Network

Click Start -> Network Connections (If Network Connection is not displayed, you can find in under the Control Panel)

Double click on “Wireless Network Connection.”

Choose “John Jay Faculty and Staff” and click connect.

Since we need more information to be inputted, the connection will fail.  Go back to the Network Connections window and click on “Change Settings for this connection” in the left window pane. Click on the wireless tab.

Click on Properties:

Network Authentication = WPA and Data Encryption = AES; click on the Authentication tab

EAP type should be Protected EAP (PEAP), the boxes below unchecked. Click on properties

Uncheck “Validate server certificate”
Click the configure button near the Select Authentication Method section.

Uncheck “Automatically use my Window logon…”

Check “Enable Fast Reconnect”
Then click OK to get out.
Click on the yellow pop-up notification entitled “Wireless Network…. Click here to select a certificate or other credentials…

Enter your username, password and Domain (John-Jay-Net)
