College Awareness: Teen Issues-Activism & Leadership (High School Credit)

This course provides students the opportunity to earn high school English credits while exploring relevant and engaging themes. Students practice reading, writing, research and critical thinking skills necessary to succeed in college level writing, history and/or social science college courses. The course also prepares students to present ideas and information orally, visually and in writing in a public forum.

Offered at Brooklyn Community HS for Arts and Media

College Visits/Tour— College tours and visitation opportunities allow students to experience the campus environment and meet with John Jay Students. 

College Day—This event brings students to campus for an informational panel discussion covering various topics in the college going process as well as pre-college opportunities available through John Jay’s Pre-College Programs. Panelist discusses College Admissions process, Financial Aid and Career development. Students are also given a tour of the John Jay campus.

John Jay College of Criminal Justice

Forensic Science Saturdays (Workshop)

The overall goal of this 4-week workshop is to introduce students to problems and techniques of scientific criminal investigations. The program will meet on two Saturdays and had an enrollment of about 60 students. 

Students learn how the sciences, particularly Biology and Chemistry, are instrumental to the criminal investigations process. Hands on labs, allow students to explore common area of forensic investigation including finger printing, DNA analysis and blood and hair sampling.

Hip-Hop and the Classics — (High School Credit or Workshop)

This course, developed in conjunction with Urban Word NYC, utilizes popular hip-hop lyrics and classical poetry - aligned to ELA standards - to illuminate bridges between “classic” poetry and hip-hop.  Centered on Urban Word NYC’s award-winning book Hip-Hop Poetry & the Classics (Milk Mug 2004), teachers use proven techniques of utilizing hip-hop to engage literacy, critical thinking and creative writing.

The Youth Education Summit (YES) — Inviting over 300 students to campus, the goal of the YES conference is to engage youth in a discussion around issues impacting career and education achievement.  The YES conference is a one-day event consisting of a keynote address, workshops and student performances.

Social Action 101- (Workshop)
College Now at John Jay College invites you to take a new and exciting workshop this winter/ spring! No test score requirement! No grade level requirement (although must still be in high school) and best of all YOU WILL LEARN TO PUT IDEAS INTO ACTION! Have you thought about a career in politics? Have you wondered about careers in law enforcement? How about Journalism or Business? Careers in Medicine? Almost every career you are thinking about will incorporate the fundamental lessons given in these series of workshops.
