Certified Public Manager Program
John Jay College, through its Department of Public Management and Office of Continuing and Professional Studies and in partnership with the Rutgers University School of Public Affairs and Administration, will begin offering the Certified Public Manager® (CPM) program in January 2010.
The CPM program is designed to equip government managers and those preparing to be managers with the skills and competencies needed in today's dynamic, public management environment. The design of the program complies with the guidelines and competency standards established by the National Certified Public Manager Consortium, which accredits the program. The program is built around the four essential competencies of: 1) leadership; 2) technical and quantitative; 3) analytical and conceptual; and 4) human skills.
By completing the CPM program, participants learn and practice such critical skills as leading people, leading change, managing for results, performance measurement and budgeting, project management and policy analysis. The CPM program is comprised of 20 modules, and consists of approximately 300 hours of classroom and online course work, group work, a professional development project, and skills assessment and evaluation. Each in-class module is two to three days, and is primarily scheduled on the weekends.
Program duration is approximately 15 months, with participants attending a mix of classroom, workshop and online sessions, along with other required readings and practical activities. Managers receive certification after satisfactorily completing all learning activities demonstrating their managerial abilities through a capstone project. Upon successful program completion, participants may become members of the American Academy of Certified Public Managers, a network of federal, state and local government leaders and managers dedicated to advancing the objectives of public management.
