Welcome to the Office of Undergraduate Research!

The Office of Undergraduate Research seeks to facilitate, promote and support faculty-mentored student research.

Why Undergraduate Research?

Participating in research is an intellectually rich experience with multiple benefits. Students work one on one or in small groups with a faculty member who supports original inquiry, data collection, analysis, and communication of results. Not only does undergraduate research support acquisition of important skills and build resumes, many of the students at John Jay who have done research go on to win awards, publish their findings, and gain entrance into some of the country’s most prestigious graduate programs.

Services for Students

• One on one meetings to discuss research opportunities
• A database of research opportunities
• Funded summer research grants
• Travel awards for students to attend scholarly conferences and present their work

• Campus-wide recognition of student research

Services for Faculty

• Identify potential undergraduate student research assistants
• Resources for effective student mentoring, including workshops, published discipline-specific mentoring guides, and online resources.
• Guidance for integrating research training and experiences into the undergraduate curriculum.
• Campus-wide faculty recognition for research mentorship
The OUR staff is also engaged in working for institutional advancement in the area of undergraduate participation in research. Through our newsletter, this website, and our annual faculty mentoring awards, we aim to raise the visibility and recognition of the great work that faculty mentors do with their student scholars.

The OUR is guided by the principles of the Council on Undergraduate Research (CUR), which can be found here. CUR defines undergraduate research as “an inquiry or investigation conducted by an undergraduate student that makes an original intellectual or creative contribution to the discipline.” Our goal is to assist in whatever ways that we can. Let us know how we can help you!
