In Peer Mentors' Words
Alexandra Avila
“I enjoy helping people and I feel that as a peer mentor I get to make a difference in students’ lives.”
Yajaira Cabrera
“Being a Peer Mentor means to be more than just a role model. One has to be a friend, who would listen without being judgmental, and provide a sense of guide for success.”
Jokairys Careres
“It makes me feel fulfilled inside knowing that I have done something positive in my day or my week and helped somebody out.”
Katherine Castaneda
“Being a Peer Mentor helped me gain experience so that I can be eligible for more opportunities, like the Peer Counseling Program here on campus.”
Joseph Deluca
“It feels good to give back to the school. I can see myself in many freshmen and I wish I had a peer mentor when I started college.”
Jason Frias
“This job thought me how to stay on top and meet deadlines.”
Genna Goldsobel
“The sense of community is the most important to me. Everybody here is so welcoming. You can go to class and then come here and always feel welcomed.”
Patrick Grimes
“For me being a peer mentor means to be a part of something bigger than myself. I can do so much good work being a part of this program.”
Alexis Hiralall
“This job made me realize that I can influence other people’s lives and that I can help people to succeed.”
Crystal Johnson
“I like that I get to share my own personal experiences, my downfalls, and my successes with newly admitted students to help them reach their maximum potential.”
Irisa Kondi
“This job helped me to learn how to relate to professors better. It gave me a different point of view on how to achieve academic success.”
Shirley Manzano
“Being a peer mentor helps me develop my communication skills and how to become a better leader, a better role model.”
Sabrina Pestel
“I like to think that the flaws I fell in when I transferred to John Jay will help my mentees—so they will not make the same mistakes.”
Sophie Plaisir
“Being a peer mentor means the world to me. I love this job! I love to help people in any way that I can.”
Ricardo Sanchez
“The title of a Peer Mentor at John Jay is earned through the ambition and passion one has to help others to excel in their college career.”
Michelle Tsang
“I love working as a team and truly putting our heads together on how to better serve our mentees.”
If you are like most first-year students, you will have plenty of questions about college life, campus resources, and what it takes to be a student at John Jay. The SASP Peer Mentors will have answers to all these questions and more.
As a student in a Learning Community or First Year Seminar, you and your classmates will be connected with a Peer Mentor who is dedicated to making your transition to college successful and fun.
