Brenda Valentin, M.A.

I came to John Jay College in January 2011 after working as an Academic Advisor and Adjunct History Professor at the College of Staten Island. I earned my BA and MA in History with a specialization in Women's Studies from the College of Staten Island. While at CSI as an academic advisor and professor, I taught several different history courses and advised multiple populations of students. I also had the wonderful opportunity of being promoted to coordinator of incoming freshmen and with time coordinator of incoming transfers students.

While many other undergraduate freshmen were still trying to figure out the majors they wanted to explore, I had my entire academic career ambitiously planned out from start to finish. I'd complete both my BA and MA in history, earn a doctorate & tenure track position and perhaps take over the world all before the age of 24. As a graduate student I had the opportunity to start working as an academic advisor and continued to do so beyond my graduation. While my first love was teaching history at the college level and archival research, I found myself drifting from my original academic plans that I made as an undergrad and venturing further into advisement.

The unplanned path that I never really expected to take turned out to be one of the most fulfilling and enriching decisions I'd ever made. I am very excited to be here at John Jay where I'll have the opportunity to teach students how they can guide themselves to academic and professional success! I hope to meet you very soon!
