Sumaya Villanueva, Ph.D.
I completed a BA in Sociology from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and a Doctorate degree in Sociology with a concentration in Social Psychology from the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor. I became the Director of the Academic Advisement Center at John Jay College in June 2008, after working for five years at Hostos Community College where I was hired as the Coordinator of Student Retention Services and then promoted to Director of Advisement and Retention Services.
Like many people, I found a career path I feel passionate about by first ruling out what I didn't want to do and then identifying my strongest skills, what I valued most, the type of environment I wanted to work in, and the population I wanted to work with. When I was pursuing the doctorate degree, I realized that while teaching appealed to me, I was less interested in doing research and publishing, both essential components for a successful faculty tenure track position. Even though I was no longer interested in becoming a professor, I knew that I wanted to work in a university environment. That is how I became interested in pursuing a career in Higher Education Administration; a choice that has led to a very meaningful and enriching career. As Director of the Academic Advisement Center at John Jay, I play an integral role in the professional development of my staff, collaborate with other professionals from the college to develop and implement quality services for our students, and most importantly, I am able to help students find their own enriching personal and academic path.
