Anthony Carpi
Interim Associate Provost and Dean of Research

Anthony Carpi, Ph.D., is a Professor of Environmental Toxicology in the Department of Sciences at John Jay College. His areas of research include the transport and chemistry of environmental mercury pollution, and the application of forensic analytical techniques to crimes against the environment. He has extensive experience in science education and mentoring, having developed a series of online resources for teaching science that are national in scope, and having created new courses in both the General Education Program and Graduate Program at John Jay College. In 2006, he founded the Program for Research Initiatives for Science Majors (PRISM) along with colleagues. PRISM was the first formal undergraduate research mentoring program at John Jay and has significantly increased the number of students moving on to graduate school in science from the College. Anthony has extensive experience in grant writing and grantsmanship, having secured major funding from the National Science Foundation, the U.S. Department of Education, the U.S. Department of State, and the New York Education Department. Dan Stageman
Director of Research Operations

Dan Stageman joined the Office for the Advancement of Research in 2010 and now serves as Director of Research Operations. In this role, Dan manages the office's internal funding and annual awards programs for scholarship, directs performance evaluation and productivity measurement for the OAR, OSP, and Research Consortium, and otherwise provides comprehensive support on research and scholarship to John Jay faculty and affiliated scholars. Dan is also a PhD Candidate in Criminal Justice at the Graduate Center, CUNY, where his research focus is on the influence of political/economic context and profit motives on federal-local immigration enforcement partnerships.

Laura Lutgen
Research Operations Assistant

Laura Lutgen joined the Office for the Advancement of Research as the Research Operations Assistant in June of 2014. Laura is responsible for social media management, OAR and Research Consortium webpage administration, assisting the OSP with their grants database, and others. In addition to her work at the OAR, Laura serves as a research assistant at John Jay College. Laura earned her BS in Criminology from the University of West Georgia, MA in Criminology from the University of West Georgia, and is currently a PhD student in the Criminal Justice program at the Graduate Center, CUNY, where her research focus is on effectiveness of treatment interventions among individuals with substance and/or psychological disorders, as well as the role of prosecutorial discretion in the practice of plea bargaining and sentencing outcomes.

Nicole Parrilla
Event Coordinator

Nicole Parrilla is the Event and Travel Coordinator for the Office of Advancement of Research. Nicole coordinates conferences and events held at John Jay College. In addition to events she also manages the college travel budget. Nicole earned her BA in Sociology from the City College of New York, CUNY and her MPA in Operations and Management from John Jay College, CUNY.

Sandra Rutherford
Assistant to the Dean of Research

Sandra Rutherford is the Assistant to the Interim Associate Provost and Dean in the Office for the Advancement of Research. Since joining the college in 1992, Sandra has held several administrative positions. She began her career at John Jay as an assistant to the previous president of the college, Gerald W. Lynch. Later, she also worked as an Assistant for President Jeremy Travis.

In 2004, she became Assistant to the Dean of Graduate Studies. In 2005, she joined the Dean of Graduate Studies in the newly established Office for the Advancement of Research during his dual appointment as Dean for the Advancement of Research. During her time at John Jay, Sandra has had the pleasure to work with students, faculty and staff in a various capacities to help advance the mission of the college. For some time, she worked alongside her father, Ronald Duesbury, who worked in the Office of the President for 25 years.
