Imani Brown '22 - Graduates Early, Heads to Law School

Imani Brown '22 Which academic achievement are you particularly proud?

Earning my certificate in dispute resolution. I have always called myself the mediator in my family and with friends, and now, with this certificate, I can officially mediate. I learned so much from the program, things like active listening, learning how to diffuse a situation, understanding different types of conflict-handling styles, and cross-cultural negotiations.

How did John Jay make your experience rewarding?
Dr. Maria Volpe (Professor of Sociology and Director of the Dispute Resolution Program) has been amazing. She has been my champion. Dr. Volpe saw things in me before I could see them in myself. There was a mediation training program and she advocated on my behalf to make sure it was paid for at no cost to me. Now, I’m earning my dispute resolution certificate. She wrote me a letter of recommendation and I was floored by her description of me.

Je’nee Fisher '20 - Gets Hands-On Experience with the Southern District of NY

“It’s so important for students to have an internship before graduating, and I was determined to not waste my final semester or this incredible opportunity,” says Fisher, who earned her bachelor’s degree and Certificate in Dispute Resolution this past May. “Internships are a stepping stone to success and have proven to be beneficial for students entering into the workforce. Not only do they enhance your skill set and increase your network, internships also help pave the way for you to enter the career of your dreams.”

Kristin Streznetsky

Kristin is currently a senior at John Jay College of Criminal Justice, graduating this fall with a Bachelor’s Degree in Criminology, a minor in Psychology, and a certificate in Dispute Resolution. She has received the Dean’s List recognition since starting there and is President of John Jay’s first international law fraternity’s pre-law chapter, Phi Alpha Delta. Focused now on studying for her LSATs, she will be attending law school in NYC immediately following her college graduation.

Kristin’s long-term goals are to help S:US or start her own nonprofit one day, and as a lawyer, help others who are experiencing life challenges like her own.
