Statewide DNA Training
As part of a $2 million contract awarded by the NYS Division of Criminal Justice Services to the College’s Office of Continuing and Professional Studies, John Jay to date has trained 560 criminal justice personnel. One million dollars of this contract was passed along to the New York City Police Department and the remainder used by John Jay to train New York State police, prosecutors, and defense attorneys. Dean of Continuing and Professional Studies Judith Kornberg noted, "Our trainers covered the state from Niagara in the west to Suffolk in the east, from Plattsburgh in the north to Westchester in the south, and many points in between." Herb Johnson of the Criminal Justice Center, Peter Diaczuk of the Center for Modern Forensic Practice and Marilyn Simpson of the New York-New Jersey Regional Community Policing Institute based at John Jay, were responsible for the training.
Arrest Made in the Disappearance of Stepha Henry (BA’06)
New York City police arrested Kendrick Williams in Brooklyn on January 15 in the murder of Stepha Henry who was last seen in Florida while visiting family last May. According to recent news reports, Miami-Dade police had located the car used by Williams and matched the bloodstains in it to Henry. Florida authorities notified the NYPD that they suspected Williams was in New York City where police were able to locate him through his cell phone use. Since her disappearance, the College has hosted services to celebrate her life and established a reward for information leading to an arrest and conviction. President Jeremy Travis noted that, "Stepha was our beloved alumna and co-worker. She embodied the values we hope to impart to all our students - a thirst for knowledge, a commitment to excellence and a desire to ensure fairness in the pursuit of justice. She was full of hope and promise. We mourn the fact that she was unable to fulfill her dreams."

Over the next several months, Alumni News will feature the members of the John Jay Alumni Association Board of Directors

Larry Cunningham (BS ’97, JD), Bronx Coordinator
Larry Cunningham is an Assistant District Attorney in the Bronx County District Attorney's Office. As a member of the office's Appeals Bureau, he litigates post-conviction matters in state and federal court. He is also the Mental Health Coordinator, supervising approximately 10 lawyers who, on a part-time basis, litigate post-adjudication insanity review proceedings. Prior to joining the Bronx County District Attorney's Office in 2006, he was a law professor for three years at Texas Tech University where he taught criminal justice-related courses and directed a criminal litigation clinic. During that time, he was pro bono counsel in a successful, high-profile appeal challenging the prosecution of pregnant women for delivering controlled substances to their fetuses. He was also a visiting professor at Texas Wesleyan University School of Law and Stetson University College of Law. Cunningham was previously an Assistant Commonwealth's Attorney for the City of Alexandria, Virginia, where he prosecuted juvenile delinquency offenses and gang cases. He tried numerous cases to verdict, including attempted murder, robbery, arson, drug offenses, malicious wounding, and sexual assault. Cunningham holds a BS in criminal justice from John Jay, where he was valedictorian, and a JD magna cum laude from Georgetown University Law Center, where he was elected to the Order of the Coif and served as an executive editor of the Law Review. After graduating from Georgetown, he clerked for the Honorable Claude M. Hilton, then-Chief Judge of the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia. Cunningham is a published author of several law review articles in the areas of juvenile justice, prosecutorial ethics, insurance law, professional responsibility, and criminal procedure. He teaches as an Adjunct Professor of Law at Brooklyn Law School.

James Brito (BS’05), Staten Island Coordinator
Like so many John Jay students, James Brito worked his way through college. He was employed as a security guard for the law firm of Proskauer Rose and for the Gerber Group, which operates a number of upscale lounges and restaurants in New York City and elsewhere. As a student, he majored in police studies and minored in security management. After he graduated in 2005, Brito became a full-time employee with the Gerber Group where his duties quickly expanded from those of consultant to event coordinator. He is responsible for all aspects of security planning and protection - a position that often involves security coordination for high profile guests. As an entrepreneur, Brito is also involved in the production and promotion of musical and cultural events and is also a security consultant to event producers at a number of television networks.

Thinking Globally Edwin M. Hernandez has a global perspective and after he completes his education, he hopes to return to the Dominican Republic to practice international law. He was one of 50 students selected from a national competition in the Dominican Republic to get a scholarship to attend CUNY. He selected John Jay because of its public administration program - particularly because the program has a concentration in international public administration. Since he came to the College, he has received numerous other scholarships and awards including the Thurgood Marshall Scholarship and the Justice Scholarship. In 2006-2007 he was the recipient of the International Student Award. One of the things he likes best about John Jay is its diversity. "The diversity at John Jay is very enriching. It gives me the opportunity to learn about other cultures and share experiences," he says. Last summer he participated in the College’s Pre-Law Summer program, a collaboration with St. John’s University Law School. Hernandez was able to take law classes, participate in an internship with the Queens District Attorney’s Office where he worked with victims of domestic violence, and clerked for the Honorable Stephen Bogacz of the State of New York Family Court. "John Jay opened the door to many opportunities for me," he says. This spring, he will be attending the Salzburg Global Seminar in Austria, where students engage in a intensive seven-day international experience exploring issues of worldwide concern.
