About Us

The faculty of the Department of Anthropology at John Jay College comprises nationally and internationally prominent scholars in cultural, applied and linguistic anthropology. The major in Deviant Behavior and Social Control is designed to provide students with a fundamental understanding of culture as it relates to the organization of society, and with a fine-grained understanding of the conditions of our contemporary world. The program of study highlights cross-cultural differences and similarities in human behavior, in conceptualizations of “deviance” and in human organization. Courses focus on such topics as: politics and law; transit and mobility; tradition and innovation; genocide, crimes against humanity and war; the interplay of race, ethnicity, class and gender; culture and personality; family and kinship; language and intercultural communication; and the impact of globalization on people and their communities. Overall, the major provides an international and historical perspective to the study of social problems and institutional responses seeking to address them. The Bachelor of Arts in Deviant Behavior and Social Control is designed to prepare undergraduates for professional employment in a number of social service careers, including non-governmental organizations (NGOs), community-based organizations (CBOs), social research, social work, protective and corrective services, prisoner reentry, community reintegration and treatment. The research, writing, and broad interdisciplinary training also provide students with the background necessary for graduate programs in the social sciences, social work, or law. The Department offers a minor in Anthropology to those students who wish to complement other areas of study. Anthropology courses also play a role in a number of other majors offered by the College including Criminology and Forensic Psychology.
