GENERAL BASIC SKILLS QUESTIONS
Where is the Testing Office and what does it provide?
The Testing Department is located in Room 3314N where students set appointments to be tested in ACT Reading and Writing and Math. The testing office conducts retests for the CUNY Math once each semester. Students who were tested by the testing office must inquire for their results at the Testing Office.
What do the Placement exams mean to John Jay students?
The placement exams determine your eligibility for your freshmen year skills courses such as Communication Skills, Mathematics and English. Freshmen will be registered for these courses based on the results of these exams.
Where is the Learning Enhancement Center and what does it provide?
The Learning Enhancement Center is located in Room 011W in the Westport Building at John Jay College. Students who qualify may register for the 24 hours of tutoring for the Math exam. Students must be aware that upon completion of their 24 tutorial hours a pass will be given by The Center to take the exam with the Testing Office. Tutors are available by appointment to help students with their math classes. Students may also use The Center to type papers for class.
Where are the Basic Skills Offices and what does the Basic Skills Program provide?
The Basic Skills Office is located in Room 019W and 016W of the Westport Building at John Jay College. The Basic Skills program provides students with intensive tutorial preparation for the placement exams. Students are required to attend all classes in order to be test eligible. Students must be aware that the Basic Skills Program only retests eligible students who have successfully met the attendance requirement.
What is the Extension Program and what does it provide?
The extension program is a part of the Basic Skills Program. It gives all John Jay Students another opportunity to pass their departmental finals for the following courses: EAP 131, 094/100; Math 095/100 and 103; and Communications 102.
How much does the Basic Skills Program cost?
In accordance with the guidelines of the City University of New York, the Basic Skills Program is free to all City University Students. However, students are expected to make a strong commitment of dedication, punctuality and hard work to the program.
Can a student register for Basic Skills over the phone?
NO. A student may request an application over the phone or they may visit Basic Skills for an application. Each application must be signed and dated by the student before it will be processed.
How can a student know if their application was received?
Students must keep a copy of the application for their records. Students may then call the office to confirm receipt. Students will be notified by mail.
What does it mean if a student does not receive a notice in the mail?
All notices are mailed at least two weeks before the start of the program. Students must PRINT their accurate and complete address for proper mail delivery. All outgoing mail leaves the college by 4:00 p.m. If this is still not successful, students can attend the program on the first day with their copy of the application.
Is it mandatory to attend classes in order to take the retest exam?
Absolutely! Attendance is mandatory of each student. You cannot take the exam without being in the program. Most importantly, students who participate in Basic Skills must attend the first day of the program in order to remain eligible to participate. The first day of the program is very important. Students who miss the first day of the program lose their seat in the program. Students must attend all classes in order to be test eligible. Absences are not permitted in any Basic Skills Program. Students must be on time for each class. Students who are 30 minutes late on the first day of the program lose their seat.
If a student has an emergency due to family conflicts, personal illness or professional work schedule, will a student be allowed to make up the class that was missed?
Yes. A student who has attended the program regularly is given the opportunity to make up the class by attending class during an additional period. However it is not advisable to make up the class during the last three days of the program.
Is the Basic Skills Program the same as attending regular classes in college?
Yes. A student will officially register on the first day of the program. Students will receive a bill and a temporary identification pass to be admitted to the building. Each student is expected to display the same honor code of behavior for fellow students, the professor, the tutor and the Basic Skills staff. The College will not tolerate a lack of appropriate behavior.
CUNY MATH PLACEMENT EXAM QUESTIONS
What does the COMPASS Math Placement Exam mean to John Jay students?
This Math Exam is one of the three entrance exams students must take. The passing score on the COMPASS Math Exam is a “30” on part one and a “30” on part two. Students who score below a “30” on part one will have to take Math 100.
Is the departmental final for Math 100 the same as the COMPASS Math placement exam?
NO. Students who were placed in Math 100 scored between a 0-29 on the placement exam. At the end of the semester, students are required to pass this class by taking the departmental final. It is the student’s responsibility to enroll in a Basic Skills Program in order to pass the Math entrance exam.
What will happen if a student fails Math 100 twice?
Students who fail the same remedial/developmental course twice will be prohibited from registering at John Jay College.
Is the departmental final for Math 103 the same as the COMPASS Math placement exam?
YES. Students who were placed in Math 103 scored between a 30-99 on part one (which is passing) and between a 0-29 on part two (which is failing) of the COMPASS exam. At the end of the semester, students are required to pass this class by taking the COMPASS exam.
What will happen if a student fails Math 103 twice?
Students who fail the same remedial/developmental course twice will be prohibited from registering at John Jay College.
If a student passes the CUNY Math placement exam, do they have to continue taking Math courses at the college?
YES. All students are required to fulfill a certain amount of math credits for their general education requirements. The amount of math courses is determined by their CUNY Math placement exam result. Once a student starts a Math course sequence, they must finish the sequence regardless of whether or not they passed the CUNY Math Placement Exam. EX. If you began at the college taking Math 100, you must then take Math 103, Math 104 and Math 108 or Math 141.
How can I retake the CUNY Math Placement Exam?
John Jay students can take advantage of any one of three methods to retake this exam. A student can receive tutorial preparation for this exam through the Learning Enhancement Center (008W). A student can join a Basic Skills Program. Read the Basic Skills Newsletter for the dates.
How many times can I take this exam?
There is no limit as to the amount of times you can take this exam. Students who have difficulty passing this exam are strongly encouraged to participate in a tutorial program. A student must pass this exam by the time they reach 60 college credits. A student must also pass this exam in order to change their degree status from Associate Degree to Bachelor Degree.
READING ACT EXAM QUESTIONS
What does the Reading ACT Exam mean to John Jay students?
The Reading ACT Exam is one part of the three entrance exams students must take. The passing score on the reading ACT exam is a “70”. Students who score below a “70” will have to take either Communication Skills 101 (required) with a score of 54 and below or Communication Skills 102 (required) with a score between 55-69. Students who score 70-89 are strongly recommended to take Communication Skills 110.
When can I retake this exam?
The Testing Office will retest students who are completing Communication Skills 102 during the semester.
How else can I retake this exam?
Students who have completed their Communication Skills requirements may sign up in the Reading and Study Skills Lab, Room 439T for the individual tutoring program for the Reading ACT exam. Additionally, a student can join a Basic Skills program to retake this exam.
What will happen if a student fails Communication Skills 102 twice?
Students who fail the same remedial/developmental course twice will be prohibited from registering.
WRITING ACT EXAM QUESTIONS
What does the Writing ACT Exam mean to John Jay students?
The Writing ACT Exam is one part of the three entrance exams students must take. The passing score on the Writing ACT exam is "7". Students who score below a "7" will have to take either EAP 121, EAP 131 OR ENG 100.
When can a student retake this exam?
According to The City University of New York, students who are enrolled in EAP 121 or EAP 131 cannot take the ACT Writing Exam. Students who are registered for one of these classes can take the ACT Writing Exam once they register for ENG 100. Students taking EAP 121 or EAP 131 must complete the course sequence before taking the ACT Writing in ENG 100.
How else can I retake this exam?
Students who failed English 100 during the semester may register for the English Extension Program. Please take a look at the newsletter for more information about the Extension Program. Students who have completed all of their English requirements may join the individual tutoring program with the Writing Center, 2450N.
Can a student be prohibited from registering at John Jay for failing EAP 121, EAP 131 and English 100 twice?
