Academic advising is based on a complex assemblage of policies, publications, procedures, personnel and services that are coordinated on a College-wide basis by the Office of Faculty and Staff Academic Advisement. The Faculty & Staff Academic Advisement Program consists of John Jay faculty and staff members who volunteer for one week (Academic Advisement Week) during the fall and spring semesters to advise lower juniors one on one. Volunteer academic advisors are key to understanding the nature of the academic program and how it can address student interests and goals. Volunteer academic advisors further help students by providing information and advice concerning policies, procedures and campus resources.

PHASE I:
All matriculated lower juniors are contacted by a direct mail campaign to participate in the program. Lower juniors are asked to select the dates and times when they would be available to meet with an academic advisor.

PHASE II:
Interested lower juniors, that is, those who sent in the completed registration form before the deadline date, are scheduled for a one-on-one advising session with a faculty or staff member. Students are strongly advised to mail in the completed registration form as early as possible in order to increase their chances of getting their first advising session time slot.

PHASE III:
Students are notified, by mail, of their advising session date, time and place. Students are also informed of their advisor and his/her telephone number. It is the student's responsibility to inform the academic advisor if he/she is unable to attend the advising session or will be late. If students are unable to attend the session, students should request another advising session with the advisor.

PHASE IV:
During the advising session, the academic advisor will have a copy of the student's appointment letter and transcript. The advisor will discuss general education requirements, major requirements, graduation requirements, CUNY assesment tests, CUNY F-grade policy, blanket/elective credits, transfer credits, course prerequisites, remedial courses, exemptions, College-Level Examination Program (CLEP) and tutoring options. Moreover, the advisor will refer the student to student service offices, programs and departments. Finally, the advisor will go through what requirements the student has fulfilled and what courses the student is qualified to take during the next and subsequent semesters.

Office Hours
The Office operates from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Mondays, Thursdays and Fridays, and from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Tuesdays and Wednesdays when classes are in session.
