The Security Management Institute (SMI) has developed a program which is designed for individuals tasked with the responsibility of providing physical security for persons at risk. Included in this category would be corporate level executives, professional athletes, entertainment celebrities, political personalities, and the families of the above, or any other individual based on their particular set of circumstances. This program will cover protective security practices modeled on the New York City Police Department, the United States Secret Service and the United States Department of State's Diplomatic Security Service.

-- Presenters are professionals with broad experience in their area of expertise, and include a retired Assistant Director for Protection Operations for the Diplomatic Security Service, a retired Intelligence Division Captain and a former Chief Hostage Negotiator from the NYPD.

In addition actual attack scenarios will be reviewed for lessons learned and information provided to allow one to prepare an in-depth travel security program.


Course Objectives

-- Learn how to conduct and manage a protective security program.
-- Develop a defensive briefing program for principals under a threat.
-- Develop an awareness of protective security concerns that can be taught to corporate employees who are not provided a protective detail.

THE SECURITY MANAGEMENT INSTITUTE

The SMI is non-profit and has as its objective the continuing professionalization of security management. The institute is designed to encourage and provide professional education and research in the security field and to assist business, industry and institutions to meet the challenge of Asset Protection through specially designed seminars, conferences and courses. Grants and donations to the John Jay Foundation are encouraged to further research and development in this growing and dynamic profession. Activities of the S.M.I. are coordinated by the Criminal Justice Center at John Jay College: Robert J. Louden, Ph.D., Director, Herbert A. Johnson, Associate Director, and Linda Gordon, Operations Coordinator.
