Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What is an academic major?
A: A major is a concentration of courses (usually 33 credits) within the subject area you have decided to focus on.

Q: How do I learn about and choose an academic major?
A: Departmental faculty and advisers are available during the Course Fair to help you make this decision. In addition, you can speak with the Counselors in the Counseling Department (room 3140N), or, if you are a SEEK student, your SEEK counselor. Career Advisement (room 3137N) is also available to guide you in this decision-making process.

Q: How do I declare a major?
A: When you applied to the College you indicated a major. However, majors may be changed at any time before graduation. A declaration of change must be submitted to the Office of the Registrar, where appropriate forms are available. It important for you to discuss the major requirements with the faculty advisors and counselors.

Q: If I am a transfer student, what do I need to know about fulfilling the major requirements?
A: At least 32 credits of course work and at least 50 percent of your major must be completed at John Jay College.

Q: How do I gain field experience within my chosen major?
A: Internship courses will provide you with an opportunity to earn 3 academic credits while gaining experience working in a field placement. An internship usually requires a minimum attendance of eight hours each week in an assigned agency. You must have completed 30 credits and have a minimum G.P.A. of 2.5 to be eligible for an internship.

Q: What is a minor and how do I choose one?
A: A minor is a secondary field of study. You may pursue a minor concentration in a field under the guidance of the academic department you select. Each department has their own guidelines for courses that fulfill requirements for their minor. However, credits earned in the minor may be applied to degree requirements in the major. The appropriate department chairperson must certify to the Office of the Registrar that you have completed the appropriate 18 credits in the designated minor; at least fifty percent of the course work must be taken at the College. Completion of the minor is noted on your official transcript.
