Graduate Externship Training Program

The Graduate Externship Training Program provides valuable training experience for future counseling professionals and psychologists. Graduate students obtain training and supervised experience in individual and group counseling, crisis intervention, consultation, outreach and education. Externs have the opportunity to work with a diverse student population who present with a wide range of concerns.

Goals of the Externship Training Program
The graduate extern program focuses on the following areas of development:

  • Theoretical/Conceptual Knowledge and Application: Externs gain knowledge in integrating and applying different theories and models of psychological development.
  • Therapeutic Modes: Externs gain competency in applying basic clinical knowledge and skills in different therapeutic modes (individual, group etc.)
  • Sensitivity to diversity: Externs gain competency in adapting assessment and intervention to the client’s culture, history and presenting problems.
  • Personal Awareness: Through individual and group supervision externs will identify and address personal issues that may impact professional functioning.
  • Professional Ethics: Externs will learn and practice the legal and ethical guidelines that govern the practice of mental health professionals.

Qualifications
Candidates must be fully enrolled in a Masters or Doctoral program in clinical or counseling psychology (or related field).

Time Commitments
The externship begins in late August and ends in late May. Externs must be available 16 hours/week and be on-site a minimum of two days/week.

Applications
Applicants are encouraged submit application materials early, beginning in February. We begin the interview process as soon as the received application packets are complete. Candidates who are considered finalist for the externship will be asked to have a personal interview. For your application packet, please include the following items:

  • A Cover Letter and Curriculum Vitae
  • An Official/Unofficial Transcript of graduate work
  • A letter of readiness from the applicant’s Director of Training/ Placement Coordinator
  • Verification of enrollment in a professional liability insurance program. (This requirement is needed prior to beginning the externship, but is not necessary in the initial application. Applications for insurance can be located by contacting the American Psychological Association Insurance Trust.)

Letters of readiness may be mailed directly or included with the application packet.
