About the Women's Center
The Women's Center takes student work study and volunteers.
Currently, we are working on multiple projects. If you are interested in helping or participating in any of these please email WomensCenter@jjay.cuny.edu or stop by the Center in Room 3322N.
Programming
We work to develop programs for students to heighten awareness of issues that effect women students. For instance, we have run a series of workshops on the continuum of violence against women, anger management, building healthy relationships, and eating and body image issues. We also sponsor guest speakers to talk about stalking, rape and sexual assault, ideals of beauty and legal issues around domestic violence.
We are currently organizing a program on women in religion, with a focus on women and Islam, and a series for the Spring term to focus on women's status throughout the world culminating in a global fashion show, highlighting issues of body, appearance, comfort and safety for women.
Outreach
Our outreach efforts involve designing and updating this website. It also involves creating fliers for our events and posting them throughout the school. We also often have a table in the North Hall Lobby or the cafeteria in order to hand out information to students and to increase awareness of the Center and issues concerning women students.
Service
As we increase awareness of the Center and issues, we get more and more students coming in for information and counseling. Students are available in the Center to make appointments with the Director for counseling, or to hand out certain information on specific topics.
Research
The Center is also in the process of organizing research projects that students can become involved in. We are doing a long-term study on domestic violence and we do need students to help do literature searches. We also post articles of recent news events that particularly effect women and we need students to contribute new items. We have a series of facts and statistics about women that we hang in the hall. For instance, one of my favorites is from the UN, estimating that:
Women do 80% of the work in the world yet receive only 10% of the wealth!
These are just some of the things we do at the Women's Center. If you are interested in contributing and volunteering on any of these projects or if you have questions, comments suggestions please email us at:
WomensCenter@jjay.cuny.edu or stop by and talk to us in room 3322N. Let us know what issues are important to you.
Participate in ending violence against women so we can all SAFELY celebrate being women.
