The Department of Philosophy
About Us

The Department of Criminal Justice embraces John Jay College's mission of engaging multiple disciplines to understand the nature of crime and how society should best respond to violence and injustice.  The department faculty has an international reputation.  It includes two distinguished professors, the current president of the American Society of Criminology and past president of the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences, the editors of Journal of Quantitative Criminology and Criminal Justice Ethics, and the directors of the Center on Terrorism and the Center for Crime Prevention and Control.  The Department has responsibility for the Bachelor of Arts in Criminal Justice.  The BA is designed to equip students with the analytical tools to analyze and critique the criminal justice system.  Students will explore the nature and causes of crime, criminal justice institutions, and the law and legal systems.  The Department maintains a close relationship with the master’s and doctoral criminal justice programs, and encourages interaction among the students in criminal justice programs at all levels.
