The Department of English
About Us

John Jay’s English Department is home to a richly diverse and award-winning faculty committed to inspired teaching, distinguished scholarship, and student success.  Our innovative courses in writing and literature build skills in critical reading and analysis, verbal presentation, argumentation, and all kinds of writing. Unlike any other program in the country, our English major includes an optional concentration in Literature and the Law.  English majors read, discuss, and write about literature, film, popular culture, and the law from multiple perspectives. The major prepares students for a variety of careers in law, public policy, business, education, writing, and government, as well as for law school and other graduate programs. The English Department, along with the Departments of Philosophy and History, also participates in the Humanities and Justice major, an interdisciplinary humanities degree that examines justice from historical, philosophical, and literary perspectives.  For students seeking to complement their primary area of study, the department offers  minors in English, Journalism, and Writing.  As advocates for excellence at John Jay, the English Department publishes John Jay’s Finest, the college’s journal of the best student writing from across the curriculum and it oversees the Fiction Writing Club's new journal of student writing and art.  In addition, the English Department is home to J Journal, featuring new writing on crime, criminal justice, law and law enforcement.
