Position Description and Duties:
GENERAL DUTIES

Performs supervisory and/or complex technical functions in laboratories in support of coursework.

-Maintains, fabricates, modifies, and repairs equipment
-Determines equipment requirements, prepares purchase specifications and coordinates acquisitions
-Trains and supervises College Laboratory Technicians, College Assistants, and other laboratory staff
-Manages set up, maintenance, and organization of student laboratories
-Maintains safety and hygiene standards
-Documents laboratory activities
-Performs related duties as assigned.

In addition to the general duties, this position performs supervisory and/or complex technical functions in laboratories in support of coursework.

Qualification Requirements:
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

High School Diploma with a minimum of eight years' related experience. Additional education may be used to meet the experience requirement: an Associate's degree may be substituted for two years' experience and a Bachelor's degree may be substituted for four years' experience. This position may also require the ability to supervise others.

OTHER QUALIFICATIONS

Preferred Qualifications include:
- a high degree of experience and familiarity with practical laboratory procedures and maintenance, particularly in the field of chemistry
- at least a bachelor of science degree in a laboratory-based natural science such as chemistry, biology, or physics, but master's and doctoral degrees are ideal
- experience in the supervision of others in a professional scientific setting because this position will supervise dozens of other laboratory technicians
- experience in compliance with safety and chemical hygiene regulations
- substantial experience in diverse scientific settings, including the private or industrial sector, government laboratories, and academic institutions that will add to our collective wisdom and experience

Position Description and Duties:
GENERAL DUTIES

 

Directs and trains other laboratory or technical personnel under general supervision and performs highly specialized work requiring significant theoretical knowledge, scientific and technical expertise, professional judgment, and insight in one of the fields of laboratory or applied science.

May oversee multiple laboratories in a single department, or laboratories in multiple departments with a significant number of technicians. Highly specialized work may include development of research designs and fabrication, modification, repair, maintenance and operation of highly complex research or technical equipment.

Job Title Name: Chief College Laboratory Technician

The Chief CLT will oversee all instructional laboratories in the science department and supervise approximately 10 full-time and dozens of part-time laboratory technicians in these responsibilities and other highly specialized work.

The Chief CLT supervises all laboratory operations of the department including:
- Procurement, recordkeeping, and distribution of laboratory supplies and equipment following sound budgeting and inventory protocols.
- Maintenance and updating of chemical and equipment inventories and facilitation of timely waste disposal.
- Routine maintenance and repair of highly specialized laboratory equipment and instruments.
- Preparation of chemical reagents, setup of equipment, and displays for laboratory exercises and experiments.
- Compliance with departmental policy and all relevant local, state, and federal regulations regarding chemical hygiene, hazardous waste disposal, environmental protection, and employee safety and health.
- Selection, hiring, supervision, and training of all full-time and part- time CLTs in the performance of similar duties as directed.
- Assignments and scheduling of full- and part-time CLTs to cover all laboratory courses in the department.
- Adherence to proper budgetary procedures for expenditures and acquisitions, as well as personnel matters including annual evaluations and corrective counseling.
