What impact will the expansion project have on the existing space?
Haaren Hall and the three spaces the College currently leases at the BMW building at 555 West 57th St. at Eleventh Avenue, the Westport Building at 500 West 56th Street and Tenth Avenue and 690 West 54th Street and Eleventh Avenue will be retained as part of the campus after the new building is built.
What is the scope of the expansion project?
While only 627,000 gross square feet in size, the expansion project is a huge undertaking in terms of the scope, cost and long term benefits to John Jay College. It will replace inadequate facilities and will produce an integrated campus with state of the art classrooms and laboratories. It will have attractive student and faculty spaces, will be entirely ADA compliant and will have reliable heating, cooling and ventilation systems,.
What were the goals for the Design of the project?
- Optimization of floor plate size and configuration.
- Maximization of multi-disciplinary interaction and programmatic identity.
- Minimization of faculty isolation and maximization of flexibility.
- To establish a public sequence concept.
- To optimize classroom and Academic Department floor configuration
- For academic 'QUADS' to promote interaction between faculty and students.
- Departmental Organization and Departmental Neighborhoods
- A Campus Commons and Haaren Hall linkages
Are there plans for any future expansion?
The project’s objective will be to right-size all spaces, not only classrooms and offices. The new campus will include much needed breathing space, namely gathering spaces for students and faculty. By CUNY standards, right-sizing means classrooms at 20 square feet per student and faculty offices of 120 square feet per full time faculty member.
Even though right-sizing or, as SOM calls it, "Decompression," will be accomplished, there will still be a need for additional space due to the continuous growth of the College.
How will the project improve the campus facilities?
The new building will have specialty spaces never before seen at John Jay, including a Moot Court and a Black Box, (a compact studio for theatre performances.) There will be state of the art, science teaching and research labs, and a 60,000 square foot Commons (imagine the size of a football field) in the middle of the block for student/faculty and staff gathering. Other features include new lecture halls and conference spaces, and spacious dining facilities overlooking the Commons. There will be natural light in classrooms, offices, and throughout the new campus, which will feature non-congested corridors and a central "cascade" for circulation, and many interior student lounges and cyber lounges.
