I’m an Associate Professor of Sociology at John Jay. I used to be Chair of the Department. I was born and raised in Boston and moved to New York in 1980 to get my Ph.D. at Fordham University. I started working as a drug reseacher at NDRI in New York and worked there full-time for 12 years until I came to John Jay (in 1993). My dissertation was about methadone and crime. I participated in and then directed a number of studies about the relationship between drugs and violence, especially homicide. I’ve also studied the connection between drugs and gambling, and drug abuse among the disabled. Most of my work has focused on heroin in New York City. I am the author of two books about heroin use in the entertainment world: Heroin and Music in New York City (Palgrave Macmillan 2014) and Heroin, Acting, and Comedy in New York City (Palgrave Macmillan 2017).
