Bio

Joshua D. Freilich is a member of the Criminal Justice Department and the Criminal Justice PhD Program at John Jay College. He is the Creator and co-Director of the Extremist Crime Database (ECDB), an open source relational database of violent and financial crimes committed by political extremists in the U.S.; the  Creator and co-Director of the School Shooting Database (SSDB), an open source relational database of all school shootings in the U.S. resulting in at least 1 injury; and the Chair (2017-19) of the American Society of Criminology’s Division on Terrorism and Bias Crimes. Professor Freilich’s research has been funded by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and the National Institute of Justice (NIJ). His research focuses on the causes of and responses to terrorism, bias crimes, school shootings, open source research methods, measurement issues, and criminology theory, especially environmental criminology and crime prevention.
