James Cauthen, Associate Professor of Government and member of the Doctoral Faculty in Criminal Justice at the CUNY Graduate Center, received a BA from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, a JD from the University of Virginia, and a PhD from the University of Kentucky. His research focuses on judicial innovation under state constitutions, state high court decision making, and death penalty appeals. Professor Cauthen's articles have appeared in Judicature, Justice System Journal, Albany Law Review (State Constitutional Commentary), Criminal Justice Policy Review, American Review of Politics, and the Journal of Criminal Justice Education. He teaches courses on judicial process and state and federal constitutional law, and received an Outstanding Teacher Award from Pi Sigma Alpha Honor Society in 2006.
