Fred Bilenkis was born to European immigrant parents. He became interested in history while growing up and listening to many stories of life and times of the past and in a society far different from his own. Along with the recognition of the events propelling his own life and society, such as the Civil Rights and anti-Vietnam War movements, he felt compelled to study the history of humanity. His research focuses on issues related to the development of the concept of human rights in an age of rising nationalism, prejudice and ethnic stereotyping, and the obligations of governments and individuals to confront foreign injustices. Since his arrival at John Jay College, he has specialized in the teaching of ancient and modern world history.
