Daniel Gasman, retired in 2006, joined the John Jay History Faculty in 1970 and the CUNY Graduate Center [History] in 1980. Before coming to the College, he taught at Yeshiva University for a number of years [1966-1970] and was also one of the founding members of the History Department at SUNY Stony Brook [1960-1966]. In 1987 he lectured as a Directeur d’Études at the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales in Paris. Dr. Gasman is a well known historian who has transformed significant areas of the cultural and intellectual landscape of modern times. His contributions to Modern European History and the history of science, along with his influence on certain key evolutionary ideas in the writings of Stephen Jay Gould, the British paleontologist Simon Conway Morris, and the American developmental biologist Scott Gilbert, are all internationally recognized achievements. Dr. Gasman continues an active career in writing and research.
