Matthew Perry received his PhD from the University of Chicago in 2007, specializing in the history of ancient Greece and Rome. His teaching and research interests lie primarily in Roman social and cultural history, especially issues of status and social standing. His current project, entitled Gender and Manumission: Freedwomen in Ancient Rome, explores how ex-slaves acquired and maintained status in the citizen community of ancient Rome.
