The Accessibility Program

The Accessibility Program (AP) offers a wide range of services and accommodations to students who have documented disabilities in accordance with the guidelines of the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 and the Rehabilitation Act of 1973. Services and / or accommodations may include priority registration, tutoring, support groups, books on tape, sign language interpreters, note takers, special adaptive equipment, academic considerations, and a variety of workshops.

To enroll in the Accessibility Program (AP), students are required to submit official documentation from a licensed physian or mental health professional and meet with the Director of A.P. Each semester students enrolled in the A.P. must complete an agreement outlining the services/ accommodations to be provided.

Students entitled to accommodations such as books on tape, sign language interpreters, note takers, readers, and special equipment must file the A.P. agreement at least one month in advance.

Program Objective

  • To provide reasonable accommodations and support services to students with disabilities.
  • To provide resources, advocacy, collaborative services, and outreach throughout the John Jay community.
  • To promote an open and hospitable environment throughout the campus for students with disabilities.
  • To assist graduating students prepare for entrance to professional graduate schools and or the world of work.

Sign Language Interpreters
Sign Language (SL) interpreters are available to translate lectures and discussions using Sign Language. SL interpreters must meet specific standards developed by the National Registry for the Deaf. Interpreter's responsibilities include:

  • Interpreting lectures, questions, answers, and conversation using gestures and facial expressions to indicate inflection, tone emphasis

Reader
A reader records textbooks, articles and supplemental material on audio tapes or reads material aloud in the presence of the student. Reader's responsibilities include:

  • Operating a 4 track cassette/ recorder or other recording devices
  • Reading aloud to student or an audio recorder
  • Reading texts and describing related materials
  • Assist students in meeting short term assignment due dates
  • Clarifying assignments and due dates with students adhering to the "Guidelines for Reading"

Note Takers
Take notes for students during class lectures. Note Takers responsibilities include:

  • Communicating with faculty, instructors, and/ or teaching assistants
  • Arriving to class on time
  • Writing or typing notes legibly

Noting any important directions and changes given to the class regarding assignments, locations of exams, changes in times or dates of classes; additions to or deletions from class schedules, and special lectures.
*A Note Taker does not take the place of the student being in class

Adaptive Computer Equipment
Assistive technology available through The Accessibility Program for Students with Disabilities includes but is not limited to the following:

Braille Writers / Braille Embossing
Devices used to produce Braille materials. Manual Perkins Braillers, a Braille 'N Speak electronic note taker, and a Juliet Interpoint embosser are available.

Reading Systems
Computer-based and stand-alone systems that read aloud scanned materials. PCs installed with Kurzweil 1000 and 3000 software, as well as a Reading Edge are available within our assistive technology lab.

Computer Screen Reading Software
A computer adaptation that speaks the contents of the computer screen and identifies graphic attributes found within Graphic User Interfaces. Jaws For Windows (JFW) is available for use within our assistive technology lab.

Speech Recognition Systems
Computer-based systems used to operate a computer via spoken commands in place of a keyboard. A PC installed with Dragon Naturally Speaking Professional is available.

Cassette Players/Recorders and Transcription Machines
Both standard (2-track) and Library of Congress (4-track) models are available for use within our office or for loan.
