New General Education Requirements

John Jay's New General Education Requirements!

We are happy to announce that starting in Fall 2013, all the CUNY colleges will offer a new General Education program!  John Jay’s faculty has developed exciting courses for this new curriculum, with a strong justice component that is at the heart of our College’s mission.

Whatever major you pursue, you’ll be able to enjoy a flexible, stimulating general education program that allows you to meet requirements in a way that fits your individual interests and builds important skills for future work or graduate study.  John Jay’s growing emphasis on liberal arts while staying committed to our tradition of justice will allow you to explore a wider range of options and to enjoy more focus on specific areas of interest with fewer broad survey courses.

If you enter John Jay in Fall 2013, you’ll be able to start taking the new General Education requirements right away. Freshmen must complete courses in all of these areas in order to graduate, while transfer students may have met some or most of the General Education requirements at their previous institution.

If you entered John Jay before Fall 2013, you’re in the lucky position of being able to CHOOSE whether you want to keep following the earlier General Education requirements or switch to the new ones, so don’t worry!

Is the new General Education program for you? Consider that question carefully, and if the answer is yes, opt in! If you’ve already completed your General Education requirements following the old model, great!

Whether you’re brand new or a continuing student, remember the Academic Advisement Center is here to help.  We are happy to answer any questions you have, discuss options, and help guide you to the best possible college experience.
