International Crime & Justice MA Students to Present at UN Commission

Six John Jay International Crime & Justice MA students will present at the 32nd Session of the UN Commission on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice in Vienna, Austria on May 23, 2023.

The students–Vera Berher, Varinyupa Buranaareepong, Shaheera Khan, Kathryn Lehnerer, Masha Wickramasinghe and Victoria-Anne Wilson–will discuss “Racial and Ethnic Discrimination in Policing.” Rosemary Barberet, professor at John Jay, and Ejim Dike, human rights strategist at EHD Advisory, will join the panel. Tejal Jesrani, program officer in the Crime Research Section of the UN Office on Drugs and Crime, will serve as discussant.

Globally, many countries struggle with how to carry out legitimate and fair policing practices. Little research has been done internationally to see to what extent data gathering and good practices have been put in place by member states to reduce police discrimination against racial and ethnic groups. This panel will present research on actions taken to prevent, reduce or redress racial and ethnic discrimination in policing in countries around the globe, including an analysis of state party reports to the UN Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination. The aim is to identify gaps as well as illuminate good practices in data reporting and analysis of trends for future research and policy making.

The students’ participation is supported by John Jay’s Office for the Advancement of Research and Student Travel Fund. The panel is sponsored by Criminologists without Borders, as well as the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences, World Society of Victimology, International Sociological Association and American Society of Criminology.
