Second Update on Progress of Bedbug Treatment

I am writing to provide an update on the progress we are making in responding to the bed bug situation at the College.

Last night, we began a treatment of North Hall, specifically the first and second floors. At the same time, the rest of the third floor and the entire fourth floor were inspected. On the third floor, five additional offices in the student development area had positive findings regarding the presence of bed bugs. On the fourth floor, ten offices and labs showed evidence of bed bugs, including several in the Science Department, several in Latin American and Latino/a Studies, and one in the Math Department. In addition, three areas in the basement of North Hall were identified. Tonight, affected areas on the third and fourth floors of North Hall will be treated. We will also begin testing the rest of the campus. We expect that the testing of Haaren Hall will be completed by the end of the weekend. All of the other campus locations will be tested next week. When these tests are complete, the results will be shared with the College community. I am pleased to report that we will open North Hall for regular business on Monday and for classes on Tuesday.

According to the experts, bed bugs are brought in from the outside. As we move forward, it is important that all of us make every effort to inspect for bed bugs in our homes and, if bed bugs are present, to take appropriate steps to address that situation. We are distributing information at all public safety desks around the campus with facts about bed bug inspection, control and management. I encourage you to pick up copies or go to the college web site or other web sites to learn more.

During this challenging time, the College community came together in admirable fashion. We have been able to respond promptly, while keeping essential services operating. I thank everyone for a truly heroic effort. We will shortly publish the revised schedule for classes that were missed. Please continue to watch the College website and monitor your John Jay email for other updates.
