HONORS PROGRAM THEME: THE COMMON GOOD
The organizing theme of the John Jay College Honors Program curriculum is “the common good.” This theme flows from the college mission and provides an intellectual framework for the curriculum. Students engage in discussion and debate to consider the varying disciplinary and contextual factors relevant to understanding the concept of the common good and how it is lived in our society. The theme encompasses a wide range of interests (from poetry to politics), which help students examine broad questions that integrate the disciplines.
HONORS PROGRAM CORE CURRICULUM
Honors Program students take one Honors Program course each semester. The curriculum encourages students to explore either research in their chosen disciplines or research that addresses contemporary community problems. The latter prepares students to consider how the academy can effectively collaborate directly with communities in addressing the common good through academic projects and discipline-based research.
HONORS PROGRAM CAPSTONE EXPERIENCE
All Honors students complete a capstone experience in their senior year. In addition, the Honors Program senior seminar brings the entire graduating class back together in the spring semester to present and discuss their various senior projects and the relevance of these projects to the common good. The seminar provides an opportunity for students to reflect on their roles as scholars, practitioners, and citizens of a global community.
HONORS PROGRAM CULTURAL EVENTS
Honors Program students receive admission to a wide variety of enriching events in New York City, from Broadway shows to live poetry competitions. One of the great benefits of participating in these events is the opportunity for off-campus fellowship with students and program faculty.
