Fall 2018 First Year Student Showcase Workshops

Workshop 1: How to Plan a Poster (Writing Center)
This workshop will introduce students to the purpose and process of a poster presentation. With a particular emphasis on the differences between a research paper and a poster, students will have an opportunity to think conceptually about how to use the components of a research paper toward creating a poster. Students will learn strategies for planning and time management as well as recommendations for poster organization and layout.
Dates: Tuesday, 10/16 & Wednesday, 10/17
Time: Community Hour, 1:40–3:00pm

Workshop 2: How to Set Up Your Poster in PowerPoint (SASP)
In this hands-on workshop, students will be introduced to the basics of PowerPoint as well as how to use PowerPoint to create a poster. With a specific focus on creating and formatting content, this workshop will benefit students who are less familiar with PowerPoint as well as those who want to begin creating their poster.

Workshop 3: Designing Charts and Graphs for your Poster (SASP)
In this hands-on workshop, students will practice creating charts and graphs and/or selecting key data from their research to present on their Showcase poster. Students will learn how to use excel and Google to create their own pie charts, tables, or other visual presentations of data.

Workshop 4: How to Present Your Poster (Writing Center)
This workshop will discuss strategies to help students present their poster confidently and professionally. Students will learn how to prepare and practice for the oral aspect of the Showcase, including professional presence (e.g. attire, body language), audience awareness, and how to anticipate and respond to questions.
