Broad research interests include: 1) investigating the biogeochemical cycling of heavy metals, especially mercury, toward understanding the pending effects of climate change on pollutant transport; 2) examining the release of trace airborne pollutants from natural and anthropogenic sources in urban environments; 3) enhancing undergraduate teaching in the nature and process of scientific investigation; and 4) environmental forensics.
Specific research efforts include: 1) laboratory investigation of the effect of precipitation, radiation, humic matter, clays, temperature, pH, and salt concentration on the reduction and emission of mercury from soil; 2) field validation (at the Black Research Forest) of soil mercury chemistry; 3) field monitoring and modeling studies of the effect of climate change on pollutant transport in the lower Hudson Valley (with A. Frei of Hunter College); 4) quantifying asbestos releases from deep excavation work in New York City; and 5) developing online educational materials with support from the Fund for the Improvement of Postsecondary Education (FIPSE) for teaching the nature and process of science.
