In addition it provides protection to the buildings and property assets of the college. It's goal is to ensure a safe campus environment in cooperation with the college community.

SICK OR INJURED
Special arrangements have been made with St.Luke's/Roosevelt Hospital for the expeditious care of all members and visitors at the College in case of illness or injury. Fast Care Ambulance Service, dispatched by this hospital, is available by notifying the Security Department. The various Security Department phone numbers and respective locations are (212)237-8524 Security Office, (212)237-8740 North Hall desk, (212)237-8266 Harren Hall desk (T Building), (212)237-8700 BMW security desk, (212)484-1120 Westport security desk. (212)237-8888 is our emergency phone number and will activate all phones at all the security desks and the security office. When calling please provide your name, location and a description of the ailment or injury. In addition, emergency phones have been placed in all bathrooms and throughout the school that will activate the emergency line (212)237-8888. Duress switches have been installed in the individual Westport building bathrooms, they are activated by pulling the strings located on the switches. A security officer will respond to your location to provide any assistance required.

KEYS AND LOCKS
The Security Department is responsible for maintaining a keying system in all college buildings. To obtain a key for any room, a key request form must be obtained at the security office and completely filled out. This form requires the signature of the department head. An email from your Department Chair/ Director will also be accepted in lieu of the key request form. Keys can be picked up three days after a request is submitted in Room 530T during the following hours:

 

09:00 AM - 10:00 PM Monday - Thursday
09:00 AM - 06:00 PM Friday

10:00 AM - 05:00 PM Saturday / Sunday

A five dollar returnable deposit is required for all keys and a valid John Jay ID card is required. When a person no longer needs a particular key, the key MUST be turned in to the Security Office. Deposits will not be returned if this rule is not complied with and a complaint will be filed with the Department of Human Resources.

If a person has a malfunctioning lock, a request should be made to the Security Department at ext. 8524, to correct the condition.

OBTAINING ID CARD AND/OR VALIDATION STICKER
Validation stickers can be obtained in the Security Office, Room 530T, Monday through Thursday from 9 AM to 11 PM, on Friday from 9 AM to 7 PM and on Saturday and Sunday from 10 AM to 5 PM. To obtain an ID card and/or a validation sticker, students must present a validated Bursar Receipt, or a "One Stop" paid receipt, while Faculty and Staff must present a current pay stub or a letter from the Personnel Office. ID cards are issued during the aforementioned times.

FEE FOR DUPLICATE ID CARD
Although there is no charge for obtaining the first ID card, there is a $5.00 fee for a duplicate ID card.

REPORTING POLICIES
All members of the John Jay community should report safety hazards, crimes, loss of property, illness or injury. Proper reporting facilitates apprehension of wrongdoers and assists in making John Jay a safer place. Incidents can be reported to any member of the security department. This can be accomplished at the security desks located in the building lobbies or by calling (ext. 8524) or visiting the Security Office (room 530T).

REMOVAL OF PROPERTY FROM COLLEGE PREMISES
All individuals desiring to remove either personal or college property from the College must first acquire a Security Department Property Pass. The form must be completed in full, signed by the department head and presented to the security officer assigned to the lobby desk upon exiting the building. The officer will verify the contents against the property pass. These passes are available at the Security Office or at any security lobby desk.

EMERGENCY TELEPHONES
There are emergency telephones located on all floors of every college building. These phones are for emergency use only and will ring directly to the security desk of each respective building. In addition, by dialing 8888 on any college phone, security phones will ring at each desk in addition to the security office.

KEY RUNS
The term "key run" means the responding of security personnel to a request to unlock or lock a door for an authorized person. This can be accomplished by simply calling security or going directly to any one of the security desks. Anytime a key run is performed, a key run card must be filled out and signed by the security officer and the person requesting the key run. Key runs will only be performed to the individual's assigned space. Any exceptions can only be made with prior authorization of the occupants. Key runs to club or Student Council offices must have prior approval from the Dean of Students, Director of Student Activities or Assistant Director of Student Activities.

CRIME STATISTICS
In accordance with the Federal Crime Awareness and Campus Security Act of 1990, yearly crime statistics are available to anyone upon request. LOST AND FOUND
A lost and found section is maintained at the security office (Room 530T). Any person finding lost or unattended property may turn it over to any member of the security department. If a person has lost property he or she should inquire at the Security Office to see if it has been turned in. When property has been recovered and the identification of the owner is evident, the security office will notify the person at home.

LOOKING FOR A JOB

QUALIFICATION FOR EMPLOYMENT FOR THE POSITION OF SECURITY OFFICER WITH THE JOHN JAY COLLEGE SECURITY DEPARTMENT

All candidates for the position of Security Officer must meet the following
qualifications for employment:

 
(1) Must be a student currently enrolled at John Jay College (at least twenty-four credits must be completed to apply).
(2) Must maintain full-time undergraduate matriculation (i.e., must be registered for at least 12 credits per semester).
(3) Must have and maintain a minimum cumulative Grade Point Average of 2.50.
(4) Must be registered for all current and future classes on a day/evening (i.e., rotating) schedule.
(5) Must be able to work rotating shifts:
(A)  7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
(B)  3 :00 p.m. to 11:30 p.m.
(C)  11:00 p.m. to 7:30 a.m.
(6) Must be able to work three days per week for a total of twenty four hours a week.
(7) Each candidate's hiring is based upon their ability to pass the requirements set by New York State Security Guard Act which includes criminal background checks.
(8) Must be able to successfully complete seventy hours of initial training.

Department of Security Hours of Operation

Security is present in North Hall and the Harren Building 7 days a week, 24 hours a day. The BMW Building is staffed from 7:30 AM until 11:00 PM Monday through Friday and 9:00 AM until 5:00 PM on Saturdays. The Security Department is located in Room 530T in the Harren Building. This office is staffed from 9:00 AM until 11:00 PM, Monday through Friday and 10:00 AM until 6:30 PM on weekends. The phone number is (212)237-8524. During off hours security can be reached at (212)237-8740, North Hall and (212)237-8266 Harren Building. The number for the BMW Security Desk is (212)237-8700 and the Westport Security desk is (212)484-1120.
