Single Stop at John Jay College of Criminal Justice

Single Stop is a non-profit organization housed at the Wellness Center for students to access free resources and build financial literacy skills. Our goal is to help you maintain economic security so that you can stay enrolled and achieve your goals. All of our services are FREE and available to John Jay students and anyone who lives with them.

Legal Services

In partnership with the Legal Aid Society, Single Stop offers free legal services on Wednesdays from 2:30 pm to 6:00 pm during the Fall and Spring semesters. Legal assistance is available for any situation that may require legal counsel or representation, including:

  • Consumer Law
  • Disability Appeal
  • Family Law
  • Housing/Eviction Prevention
  • Immigration
  • Public Benefits

Financial Services

In partnership with the Financial Counseling Division of the New York Legal Assistance Group (NYLAG), Single Stop offers comprehensive financial coaching on Thursdays from 10:00 am to 6:00 pm throughout the academic year. Our financial coach can help you with:

  • Addressing Debt Status
  • Budgeting/Managing Expenses
  • Building/Maintaining Good Credit
  • Creating a Savings Plan
  • Fraud/Identity Theft
  • Increasing Financial Literacy
  • Learning Investment Practices
  • Reviewing Your Credit Report

Public Benefits

Single Stop works closely with community partners to increase access to public benefits. We help with programs like:

  • Cash Assistance
  • Home Energy Assistance Program (HEAP).
  • Lifeline (free cell phone service)
  • SNAP (food stamps)
  • Subsidized Child Care
  • Unemployment Insurance/599
  • WIC

In relation to these benefits, we provide the following services:

  • Screening
    • Find out if you are eligible for certain benefits according to official policy
  • Application Assistance
    • Submit/Complete applications on-campus
  • Case Management
    • Communicate with benefit agencies 
    • Recertification process
    • Submit documentation
  • Advocacy
    • Help get the benefits you may be entitled to receive
    • Informal conference and fair hearing procedures

NYC Department of Social Services / Human Resources Administration

For further aid, in partnership with the NYC Department of Social Services / Human Resources Administration (DSS/HRA), Single Stop offers help to students and their households who need assistance with their public benefits case. A DSS/HRA Community Liaison is available the second and fourth Wednesdays of each month from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm throughout the academic year.

Tax Preparation

The documents required to file a tax return include:

  • Any tax documents sent to you (1098-T, 1099 etc.)
  • Documentation and Tax ID number if claiming the Child Care Tax Credit
  • Government Issued ID
  • Social Security Card
  • Voided Check or Bank Account & Routing Number if you would like direct deposit for your tax return
  • W-2 Forms for each job
