Environmental Facts and Sample Faculty Assignments

     Some water use environmental facts that can be 
used in class assignments.

Showerhead; Low flow showerhead 2.5 gallons of water per minute; High flow 5.5 gallons of water per minute;
Baths: 36 gallons of water per bath;
Toilet; Water saving use 1.6 gallons per flush; Regular toilets use 5 per flush;
Brushing teeth; Shutting tap when not rinsing uses .5 per brushing; Letting water run the whole time uses 6 gallons per brushing;
Hand or face washing; Shutting tap when not rinsing uses 2 gallons per washing; Letting water run the whole time uses 3 gallons per brushing;
Washing dishes; Using a wash basin uses 5 gallons of water; Letting water run the whole time uses 20 gallons every 5 minutes.


Examples of faculty assignments:

Ecological Footprint: Professor Joan Hoffman has her introductory economic students write papers on the ecological footprints of products used on campus by students or the College.
Interviews and Oral Histories: Professor Tom Riordan’s writing students who take on campus writing assignments have interviewed those who have participated in the effort to improve environmental stewardship on campus so that we have a historical record of what does and doesn't work. Some of their work appears on the web pages.
Campus Surveys: Research Methods (PAD 715) students conducted a survey of student opinions on recycling importance and effectiveness of various methods used on campus.
