Areas of Expertise: Cultural Sociology, Social Theory, Phenomenology, American Islam

I am a cultural sociologist working within the tradition of phenomenological sociology. My theoretical interest lies at the intersection of sociology and philosophy, and covers such figures as Simmel, Heidegger, Schutz and Bourdieu. I am particularly interested in the agonistic elements of classical sociology (i.e., charisma, anomie, life). On the empirical front, I have done ethnographic research on various aspects of the cultural settlement of Islam in the United States and the tension between Muslim life and American cultural forms. I am currently at work on a book manuscript dealing with the cultural citizenship of Muslim communities and the emergence of a distinct American Islam.
