Sophomore Advisement

Sophomore Advisement

Welcome, Sophomores!

Congratulations!  You have successfully completed your first year!  This sophomore year is one of the most important in your academic career.  There are many important decisions that require your ernest consideration and thought.  Please prepare to discuss these topics with your academic advisor.

Preparing for Advisement

As a lower sophomore, you will be assigned an Academic Peer Advisor.  Your advisor will reach out to you to schedule a virtual advisement session where you will discuss your current courses, career goals, experiential learning opportunities, and future course selection.

- All communication from your Academic Peer Advisor will be sent to your John Jay Email!

- Make an appointment with your Peer Advisor on Navigate.  Log in using your CUNY First credentials.

- It will be important that you know How to Access Your Degree Audit and Unofficial Transcript prior to your appointment.

- Explore major options and requirements on the Major Advisement & Resources page.

- Interested in exploring beyond your major?  Take a look at the various Minors and Certificate Programs that are available at John Jay.

 - Take a moment for some Successful Academic Planning by reflecting on your values, interests, goals and strengths.

Exploring Majors

Are you satisfied with your current major on file?  If not, now is the time to research and select an area of study that you are genuinely excited about!

- Feeling overwhelmed by your options?  Start by visiting our How to Choose a Major page which breaks down all of John Jay's majors into five categories.

- Discover the many myths associated with deciding on a major.

- When deciding on a major, don't discount your general education requirements.  Did you excel in a particular area?  Did you thoroughly enjoy particular readings and assignments?

- Meet with your major advisor.  Before your appointment, take some time to review your major's requirements, sequencing, and course descriptions and write down any questions or concerns that you may have.

- The Occupational Outlook Handbook is a career resource with profiles of different occupations in the United States, including information on typical duties, work environment, education and training needed, earnings, and job outlook.
