The Upward Bound Program @ JJC The Goal
The goal of the John Jay College Upward Bound Program is designed to help first generation high school students with their academic growth and development; all of which to further provide access to post secondary educational opportunities. Likewise, the Program focuses on enhancing student's academic performance and motivational levels through advocacy and mentor ship.

Through the myriad of services provided by the Program (i.e. mentor ship, advisement, testing and test preparation-SAT/ACT/Regents, personal counseling, formal academic instruction, assessment, cultural enrichment, developmental workshops, college preparation and much more) students enrolled in the Program find themselves with increased academic readiness and motivational and confidence levels.

The program is combined of a rigorous tutorial component which takes place during the academic year, and an intensive summer residential component. All students are required to remain in the Program on a year round basis.

The academic year consists of tutorial sessions conducted weekly, Tuesday through Thursday 3:30 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. In addition, the Program offers a Saturday instructional session (10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.), in which highly qualified instructors provide group and individual assistance.

The summer residential component takes place at a college or university willing to host the Program. In the past the Program was held at Fordham University. The State University of New York Maritime College in the Bronx, and the College of Mount Saint Vincent in the Riverdale section of the Bronx. These institutions provide a safe, accommodating environment for expanded learning in a college setting. More specifically, the instruction to such ambience assists students with the recognition of the vast opportunities and possibilities available in the post secondary education. It is a full time commitment which requires all students to take six hours worth of course work four days per week, for a period of six weeks. Students receive instruction from NYU licensed board certified instructors. In addition to the classroom participation, tutoring and recreational activities are also available. At the end of the Program students who have successfully completed the course work receive high school equivalent credit for their participation, which is in accordance with the NYU summer school curriculum and has been endorsed by the Superintendents Office of Brooklyn, Manhattan, Bronx, and by the Superintendent of the NYC Alternative Schools (letters furnished upon request).
