Moelis Social Entrepreneurship programming provides an interdisciplinary field of inquiry to study innovative solutions to social issues and the creation of social impact. Social enterprises work to build commercial organizations that have specific social objectives, maximizing benefits to society and the environment, and reinvesting profits in social programs. Social entrepreneurship is the initializing force behind social enterprise and seeks to build intersections between the private and volunteer sectors. Social entrepreneurs use existing business techniques and strategies to balance activities that provide financial benefits with social goals. Participants of these programs will develop skills such as human-centered design thinking and be engaged in highly interactive, project-based learning. A major emphasis will be placed on innovative thinking that can be applied in the business, nonprofit, and public sectors. Through experiential learning and community-based projects, participants will learn to develop partnerships in support of social purposes and undertake innovation for social change.
The Moelis Social Entrepreneurship Initiative will design, launch and institutionalize three industry aligned programs in social entrepreneurship.
The programs will focus on the following objectives:
A general education course to introduce students to ideas and opportunities associated with social entrepreneurship and John Jay’s social entrepreneurship programming
Continuation of the Moelis Social Entrepreneurship fellows’ program, in which 10 students per year are selected from a wide pool of applicants to engage in experiential-learning based courses
Robust co-curricular programming aimed at career readiness
Career services capacity in the social entrepreneurship field to facilitate workforce readiness and employment entry
An influential network of industry professionals as part of the advisory committee to inspire students with “real world, real time” experiences
