Susy G. (Mendes) Cullen Eliana Forero

OFFICE FOR THE ADVANCEMENT OF RESEARCH
Associate Provost and Dean of Research
Anthony is Associate Provost and Dean of Research, Professional Studies, and International Partnerships at John Jay College. In this capacity, he provides strategic leadership toward advancing the College’s research and outreach missions. He supports faculty and staff as they manage major research projects, lead research Centers and collaborations, develop international partnerships, publish manuscripts, secure grants, and produce scholarly and creative works. He has been at the institution since 1997, working as professor, Deputy Chair and Chair of the Department of Sciences, and has served on numerous committees focused on institutional effectiveness, student retention, and technological innovation. He is the founder and Director of the Program for Research Initiatives in Science and Math, a nationally-recognized and highly successful mentoring program for promoting diversity in STEM fields. His personal grant portfolio includes almost $25 million from sponsors including the National Science Foundation, U.S. Department of Education, U.S. Department of Energy, New York State Education Department and others. His maintains an active research portfolio, investigating the transport of mercury in the environment, and teaching science as a process of discovery.
Director of Research Operations
Daniel Stageman is Director of Research, encompassing research operations, research development, and research communications. Daniel joined the Office for the Advancement of Research in 2010, and holds a PhD in criminal justice from the CUNY Graduate Center. His academic work examines political economy and profit in American immigrant detention, and the economics of Federal-local immigration enforcement partnerships. He has written on a wide variety of topics including immigrants and crime, immigrant mental health, civilian oversight of policing and police reform. He teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in John Jay’s Sociology and Criminal Justice Departments when his schedule permits.
Daniel is responsible for all programming designed to enhance and support faculty scholarship, including internal funding, awards, events, professional development, promotions and social media communications, data collection, data analysis, data reporting and dissemination.

Director, Office of Sponsored Programs
Susy G. Mendes Cullen joined John Jay College in 2003. Throughout her tenure at the College, she has served the faculty and staff at all sponsored programs/research administration levels. She was appointed to the title of Assistant Director of Sponsored Programs in 2006, Deputy Director in 2007, Interim Director in 2012, and Director of Sponsored Programs in 2013. Susy works closely with the Dean of Research and OAR's Director of Research Operations and the Director of Grants, Budgets, and Special Projects to promote grantsmanship and support all activities involved in the acquisition and administration of grants.
Susy currently oversees the Pre-Award side of grants and contracts for OAR and works with faculty and staff on discussing prospective research/other projects for funding, exploring and identifying appropriate funding opportunities, and preparing and submitting proposals to external agencies and private sponsors. With a wealth of knowledge and experience in post-award administration, she can also advise Principal Investigators and support the Director of Grants, Budgets, and Special Projects in navigating post-award administration and relations with our fiscal agent, the Research Foundation of CUNY.
Susy earned her BA in Psychology from Iona College; MA in Forensic Psychology from John Jay College, CUNY; and MBA in Marketing from Baruch College, CUNY.

Susy contributes to OAR because she enjoys assisting our faculty and staff make their research ideas and projects a reality. She also wants to work with OAR's customer service-oriented team of professional and friendly colleagues to deliver the best service OAR can provide for the College.
Director of Grants, Budgets and Special Projects
Amrish joined the Office for the Advancement of Research as Assistant Director of Sponsored Programs in April of 2014 and was appointed to Director of Grants, Budgets and Special Projects in August 2019. He oversees all aspects of post-award administration for John Jay’s grant portfolio, working closely with faculty and staff on budget development and management, as well as liaising with the Research Foundation of CUNY on post-award matters as they arise. He also works collaboratively within OAR to prepare reports and analyze assessment metrics to better track productivity.
Prior to joining John Jay College, Amrish worked in the grants offices of Queensborough Community College and Baruch College, where he gained nearly a decade of experience in proposal development and sponsored programs administration. He earned his degree in Computer Information Systems from Baruch College, CUNY.

Tahir Fazal
Research Operations Assistant
Tahir manages and processes John Jay college's Research and travel account, manages internal funding (scholarships and awards), and executes contract management in collaboration with the RF CUNY.
Tracking the overall travel budget, departmental spending, and departmental distribution policies
He is a principal investigator, ensuring procurement processes comply with RFCUNY policies.
He attained a master's degree from the University of Exeter, England, with Merit (Global excellence award recipient).
While studying in England, he worked as a market researcher for the Exeter City Council.
While studying for his graduate degrees in the UK and the US, He gained skills in writing and researching extensively and effectively. The University of Exeter supported him in diversifying and improving his critical thinking and problem-solving skills. He analyzes data using SPSS and R. Moreover, He started the Python language specialization course in data science and machine learning.
Additional skills: proofreading and copyediting; academic and business writing; quantitative and qualitative research skills; data and statistical analysis; critical thinking; fluent in English and Urdu/Hindi; beginner-level French.

Remmy Bahati MS
Research Communications Specialist
Remmy Bahati joined John Jay College’s Office for the Advancement of Research in 2023. As Research Communications Specialist, Remmy works to enhance and support scholarship at John Jay College of Criminal Justice, making the OAR a mouthpiece highlighting all of the exemplary work coming from John Jay’s research centers, faculty, and staff.
Before coming to John Jay, Remmy worked as a legal news assistant for Law360, monitoring Congress and federal and State courts across the United States. She also worked for the United Nations Secretariat in New York as a global communications fellow in the Department of Management, Strategy and Policy Compliance.
Remmy also graduated with a Research fellowship to work for the Brown Institute for Media Innovation at Columbia and Stanford Universities, where she researched ways Corporate Companies in America can transition to using 100% renewable energy. Richemont America has published her research report.
Remmy received her Master of Science in Journalism from Columbia University in the City of New York and her B.A. in Journalism and Mass Communication from Ndejje University. A television producer, video editor, and writer, she has contributed to Pass Blue, Columbia News Service, Daily Monitor, New York Times digital, NBS TV, TRT World, BBC, Huffington Post, and Citizen TV.

Grants Administrative Associate
Cherryanne Ward joined the Office for the Advancement of Research as the Office’s Grants Assistant in 2007 and currently serves the role of Grants Administrative Associate. She assists faculty and staff on post-award management of their grant-funded projects including hiring personnel, submitting timesheets, release time, summer salary, and other reimbursements. She is very knowledgeable of all Research Foundation E-Services systems such as the electronic Personnel Action Forms, electronic Payment Requests, Time and Leave, Summer Salary, and others. Cherryanne is also tasked with tracking the submissions of proposals submitted to agencies as well as other administrative tasks. Cherryanne earned a B.A. in Sociology from Hunter College, and a Master’s in Business Management and Leadership from the School of Professional Studies, CUNY.

Grants and Research Budget Analyst
Kuralay Zharmagambetova joined the Office for the Advancement of Research in 2021. As Grants and Research Budget Analyst, Kuralay is responsible for providing support in the fiscal administration of the college’s research portfolio and the development, analysis, and monitoring of the OAR operating budget. She coordinates a broad range of accounting and finance tasks and services with the goal of ensuring the college’s research operations are administered with the utmost integrity and transparency.
Before devoting her work full time to John Jay, Kuralay had an accounting experience in private industry. Her focus was on financial strategies that support the business including budgeting, tax planning, and forecasting. Kuralay holds a master’s degree in Business Administration with a concentration in Accounting and Finance from the University of Houston – Victoria.

Eliana Forer, JD, MS
Director, Research Compliance and Integrity
Eliana Forero joined the Office for the Advancement of Research as Director of Research Compliance and Integrity in 2023. Eliana oversees research compliance activities and provides training and guidance on topics related to the Human Research Protection Program (HRPP), Responsible Conduct of Research (RCR), Research Agreements, Conflict of Interest, Export Control and other areas. She serves as John Jay’s Research Integrity Officer (RIO), HRPP Coordinator, and Research Agreements Point Person. Eliana provides crucial support to John Jay faculty, staff and student researchers as they navigate the compliance landscape and conduct research with integrity.
Eliana holds a JD from CUNY School of Law with a focus on Intellectual Property Law; MS in Research Bioethics from Union Graduate College / Mount Sinai School of Medicine; and BA from Sarah Lawrence College. Eliana has over a decade of research ethics and compliance experience and extensive experience conducting research in DNA damage and stem cell biology.
Eliana is the main contact at John Jay for questions, consultations and training related to research regulations, CUNY and John Jay research policies and procedures, and best practices, including:
