Scholarship Payment

1. WHAT IS A SCHOLARSHIP?

A scholarship is a grant or payment made to support a student's education, awarded on the basis of academic or other achievement.

2. HOW DO I APPLY FOR A SCHOLARSHIP?

  • John Jay College Scholarships: Application, eligibility requirements, award status, and other contingencies should be discussed with Financial Aid's Scholarship Office.  For more information, visit: Scholarships | John Jay College of Criminal Justice.

  • Outside Scholarships: Recipients of a scholarship from an employer, fund or other organization must be approved by the organization.  In addition to the scholarship check, the organization must also provide the student with an award letter (on official letterhead) indicating their guidelines/stipulations for processing their payment (i.e., student can/cannot receive refunds from their award, student must have a minimum GPA level, scholarship is for tuition only, etc.).

3. HOW DO I PAY WITH AN OUTSIDE SCHOLARSHIP?

Outside scholarships are accepted at the Bursar’s Office in-person or by mail.  Be sure the scholarship payment includes your emplid ID number in the reference/memo section of the check.

  • In-person: The Bursar's Office is located in the New Building, RM: L.70.  First, obtain a B-ticket from the Jay Express kiosk.  A Bursar representative will then call the ticket number to process the transaction.

  • Mail to the following address:

ATTN: Bursar's Office, RM: L.70 NB
                       John Jay College
                       524 West 59th Street
                       New York, NY 10019

4. WHO IS THE OUTSIDE SCHOLARSHIP CHECK MADE PAYABLE TO?

John Jay College.  If your scholarship is made payable to you, we will not be able to accept/process it.

5. HOW IS A SCHOLARSHIP RECORDED?

John Jay scholarships are posted to the student record as “College Scholarship.”  Outside scholarships are posted to the student record as "Outside Scholarship."

6. I HAVE A PAST-DUE BALANCE/BURSAR HOLD.  CAN I USE A SCHOLARSHIP TO CLEAR IT?

Financing inquires such as federal/state grants, loans or scholarships must be addressed with the Office of Financial Aid.  All awards authorized by Financial Aid MUST be reflected in your financial account as a payment or as a pending payment in order to review hold status.  Partial awards may require the student to pay the difference in their tuition costs—this payment would be required to review the hold status as well.

  • If you have been awarded an outside scholarship, please ensure to inform the Bursar's Office before the semester begins.  You will also be required to provide documentation (see #2-4 above).
