Academics

In our increasingly internationalized world, bilingual language fluency can be a major asset for almost any career path and is a necessity for some.

The Department of Modern Languages and Literatures offers courses in eight languages — American Sign Language, Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Portuguese and Spanish. Any of these languages, coupled with a John Jay major, will enhance your marketability and earning potential.

Spanish is the second most used language on earth and the second most spoken language in the United States. It is one of the six official languages of the United Nations and 21 nations list Spanish as their official native language. Because of this, the Department of Modern Languages and Literatures offers a B.A. in Spanish with two separate tracks to choose from. For those wishing to supplement another major with skills that will increase their employment and earning opportunities, the Department offers a Spanish minor and certificate programs in English/Spanish translation and interpretation.
