In March 2020, John Jay College of Criminal Justice faced a daunting challenge when the COVID-19 pandemic forced us to close our campus. However, the faculty members who were previously teaching on-campus bravely embraced the situation and quickly adapted to a distance learning format with the help and expertise of the Department of Online Education & Support (DOES). The department created a program called "Effective Practices in Online Teaching" that aimed to certify faculty members in practical Blackboard usage and effective online teaching pedagogy. The experienced online faculty members confidently led their peers, grouped by disciplines, and trained 339 faculty members to teach online. This DOES initiative exemplifies the power of community to overcome challenges and emerge victorious.
The John Jay College distance-learning unit, John Jay Online, was awarded a Telly for its promotional video in the 37th annual Telly Awards competition. The video, titled "The Literature and Law of American Slavery: Promotional Video," highlights John Jay Online's first massive open online course (MOOC), which features Distinguished Professor of English John Matteson, the Pulitzer Prize-winning author of "Eden's Outcasts: The Story of Louisa May Alcott and Her Father." Dr. John Matteson collaborated with Director of Instructional Design Holly Davenport and the multimedia team to create the video.
